Dr Hilary says...

Dr Hilary Jones believes that breastfeeding should not be extended. He said: "After the age of one breast feeding is bizarre, unusual and not necessary. After a year the mother gets more out of breastfeeding than the child does. This act is more for the mother's comfort than the baby's. The bonding process is over and nutritionally the baby no longer needs the milk."

Dr Hilary added: "Women breastfeed their children for longer for a variety of reasons. It can be to avoid renewing sexual relations with their partners, it's easier for some mothers to just give in to the child while other mothers prefer to pretend their grown up child is still a baby."

Extended breastfeeding can generate problems for the child, Dr Hilary added. "If the child's friends find out they may get picked on and it can delay the youngster from developing his or her independence. And as children get a little older, they are forming sexual feelings so it's very bizarre to be then placing a child to the breast."

Dr Hilary would dissuade mothers from breastfeeding for an extended period of time and with regards to Jenny and her children he thinks the older child may still be requesting the breast because she sees the younger child as a rival. However, says Dr Hilary, it's up to the mother to stop this behaviour.

Yes, twelve-month-olds are so grown-up.

Wow, that guy is really projecting his crap onto little babies....

Poor guy was probably formula fed and now resents all the sweet babes who get the good stuff.

Sounds like this "grown up" is still acting like a child.

I'd love to see his research that supports that drivel.

Well, at least all of the experts that they consulted agree that extended BF is normal and fine.

Grown up child? What age is he talking about here? I don't consider a one year old (heck even a 2,3,4,5... year old) to be a grown up child. When I hear that I think "teenager". I don't know anyone who is still BFing a teenager. Heck I would hazard to guess that the majority of women in the western world that BF don't go much past 3 years old (on the high end...and not that it really matters). He talks like there is just the "epidemic" of women BFing school age children. Watch out! There Everywhere! Attack of Teh Exposed Boobies!

As far as giving in to the child? Yeah it is often easier. And to me, it's really no big deal or inconvenience. As long as the mother is okay with it...why do these people insist on chiming in with their "professional" opinions (and that's basically what this is...an opinion) It's not their boob...WHY do they care? Why is this even an issue or a "debate"? Would this such a hotly debated topic if we fed babies with the tips of our fingers instead of our breasts?

Gosh...if dd's little friends found out that she's still bfing at age 2, that she's still in diapers, sleeps with me, still gets spoonfed by me....oh the horror! I'm setting up my little girl for disaster!

Has he ever SEEN a toddler nursing? My husband now calls it Olympic Free-style Nursing because of all the contortions and acrobatics our son manages! Not exactly "comfortable" many times. For my comfort, my foot.

I'm a freak of nature in that Breastfeeding and Zoloft increase my needs rather than reduce them. I really have very strange drug interactions. Opiates make me hyper, uppers make me pass out. I think my body chemistry is all screwed up LOL!! So I guess I am the exception but still i had to laugh when he wrote that bit of garbage.

I kind of thought bonding was, like, a continuous process. I didn't realize it ended with breastfeeding.
