What kind of floor is in your kitchen/dining room?

We are replacing the old floor pretty soon, and I'm not sure what I want. I would love harwood, but people keep telling me that is not a good choice for a kitchen. Any ideas?

We have ceramic tile in the kitchen and carpet in the living room. Hardwood is not such a good choice in water areas. If I had my time back all except the entry way would be laminate or engineered flooring.

As it stands now we are taking up the carpet in the living room soon and putting down laminate that looks like wood.

I think ceramic(porcelain or marble also) tile or laminate. Of course you can get some really nice looking vinyl flooring now as well..and very inexpensive.

We have Pergo in the kitchen, I would rather hardwood there, and hardwood in the dining room. I don't worry about water...........I can't see something HUGE spilling and sitting there for a week.

We have carpet, and I would advise against it. . It wasn't our choice. If I had my choice, I'd go hardwood. I'd love to have bamboo or cork throughout my house, but alas I am stuck with my ugly carpet for now.

This was here when we moved in.

It actually looks really nice, even though its linoleum. People always compliment it. and it doesn't show dirt AT ALL!! Always looks clean!

Hardwood in the dining room, and linoleum in the kitchen....which will eventualy be changed to tile, big black and white checkerboard ones OR (cause I can never make up my mind) ceramic tile.

We just had a hardwood floor installed throughout the first floor - kitchen, dining room, living spaces, bathroom, laundry room. It's so fantastically awesome . Ours is technically an engineered hardwood, because we wanted hickory, and engineered was more stable. We paid extra for distressed, since we have 3 small kids, and had a more natural finish applied (OSMO Polyx-Oil - a hard oil finish). I think there are issues with a laminate floor in potentially wet places, but not hardwood.

We have an eat-in kitchen, and it's tiled. We don't have a dining room.

My Dad had a kitchen that had Pergo, and there weren't any problems with water damage. It wouldn't be my choice, but it worked for him.

I have hardwood everywhere. Love it in the kitchen bec it feels warm, never cold like tile and things don't smash on it when they fall. I sweep it up once a day or more and then mop once a week. Very easy and I highly recommend it.

Our dining room is hardwood. Our kitchen is some cheap tile. Our bathroom is hardwood, except for some tiled areas in front of the tub and the toilet, and it is great.

One of the houses we want to buy has hardwood in the kitchen. If were putting flooring in, we would definitely put hardwood in, even in the kitchen.

We have Italian tile in the kitchen and I LOVE it. It's toasty warm every morning (radiant floor heat) in winter and wonderfully cool in summer. It doesn't show the dirt and it sooooo easy to clean with a microfiber mop and diluted white vinegar.

In (what will eventually be) our dining room we have red oak flooring (as we do in every other room, except the mud room - tile - and bathrooms - linoleum).

You know I have been thinking about it..I think I would go with hardwood. It's nice, it's soft, can be refinished in years to come etc. and look absolutely beautiful again.

and If it did get damaged I am sure the homeowners insurance covers that...the only thing that could really damage it would be maybe a big dishwasher leak.

So I am voting for hardwood...I am getting laminate because I can't afford hardwood. We will have hardwood someday when the kids are older.

The kitchen is linoleum and the dining area is carpeted and I can't change that because we rent. I dream of have floors and not carpets someday. I know that no help with your question but I wanted to post you a congrats on getting something new!

We have hardwood and I LOVE it. It is hand-scraped oak with a walnut stain and can really take a beating from the kids. Since it's so dark it rarely looks dirty. I would never want anything else in my kitchen. I also can't imagine how water damage could occur, unless maybe the dishwasher overflowed. But then you'd be screwed with laminate too.

We had laminate in our last house and I hated it. It always looked streaky after I mopped and when the kids would drop things it would leave ugly chips. Sure it had a 20 year warranty but how the heck do you go about replacing the damaged strip?

I also like how warm wood is over tile with the added bonus that things don't break when dropped. We had tile when we first moved in and the kids were breaking dishes everyday (we don't use plastic). Now we break dishes maybe once a month.

So my suggestion--wood, wood, wood!

It's wood and I'm not sure why anyone would think it's a poor choice for a kitchen? Water has never been a problem we even have wood flooring in the bathroom.

We have ceramic tile in our kitchen, entryways and bathrooms, laminate in our living room and carpet in our bedrooms. I love, love, love my ceramic tile. It's so easy to clean and I never worry about water or drips or mud, it just wipes right up. The laminate is just okay...I'm not in love with it, but we knew we weren't staying in this house forever and we just don't care that much for carpet, so we went with the laminate. In my next house it's going to be all hardwood and ceramic tile.

We have hardwood floors in every room except the bathroom and converted basement/offices (where its tinted concrete).

We do have hardwood in the kitchen and I LOVE it and it blends in with the rest of the upper level of the house. Its also super easy to care for: vinegar and water is all you need. The only problem is it dents when you drop something heavy on it. I only have cast iron and Le Creuset and have to be careful. Then again, it would break ceramic tile.

I don't know why people think it's such a bad idea to have wood in the kitchen. We had wood floors in our kitchen in our last house (old house) and it was awesome. I liked it so much better than the vinyl that's in this one. We do have hardwood under there... I hope eventually we'll get back to that. I don't really like tile... Thought about it for our bathroom, but probably not.
