Perineum Stretching

Anyone else doing this with your DP? We've only done it a few nights so far but BLEAH, not a fan! Though I can see why it is useful...

Nope. Couldn't bring myself to do that. From many things I've heard there is no significant proof that it really does help in labor. Now holding the tissue while pushing does help, so I always make sure my OB does that.

I've read it does nothing, and my midwife and doula confirm.
It's an old wives tale, like toughening your nipples apparently.

I have a friend who did it and swore it made a difference my midwife/doula both say they think it's ok because it gets you used to the pressure but doesn't do much in terms of tissue prep. I'm not doing it.

not yet, b/c i am just not ready to get too loose down there, yet. but if you are ready for it, i think it's a great idea! we did it last time, dh came early and i did tear enough to need a few stitches. but i only pushed twice and she came very quickly out so i didn't have as much time to stretch at the end of the labor.

my midwife told me it is one of those things we really don't know if it helps or hurts, so I didn't do it with ds1 and didn't tear at all. I did push very slowly with him though. Ina May Gaskin wrote in one of her books, spiritual midwifery I think, that women who are sexually active usually have less tears than women who swear off sex during pregnancy (and usually are less likely to go way overdue!). So I do try and take advantage of being on maternity leave and having more time with dp
