UN-FREAKIN' BELIEVABLE.

A "check mark" led to this poor boy being circumcised. The parents didn't sign a consent form.

Circumcised twice, actually...

At the hospital I work at, we have the 'check this box' form that moms fill out shortly after arriving for labor. (If they can at that time, if not they fill it out after the birth) There is a check box for feeding method, WIC, baby pics, and circ. Then you sign the bottom. We always double check (so to speak) with the mother before doing the circ.

This is a sad sad case for the baby more than anybody especially due to the 'revision.'

Isn't there a separate consent form for circ? There really should be. I can't believe it's merely on a "checklist" with other things like pics or no pics.

Where I gave birth there was also just 1 form as a checklist which went over what a PP said. The nurses fill it out, parents sign afterwards.

I think there is another form but since I didn't circ and don't deal with them too often, I can't be sure.

Gee, wonder if they have check marks for "excruciating pain" (check here) and "non-effective pain meds" AKA sugar water (check here).

: What kind of hospital considers ticking a box on a checklist consent for a surgical procedure?

One that doesn't consider circumcision a surgical procedure and one that whose society running it doesn't take said procedure very seriously.

There absolutely should be. This is insane.

It's a warning to people as well, if you're going to have a hospital birth, better be sure someone is with the baby 100% of the time.

no - this is insane. they said they are going to appeal. as with any surgery - the mom has to sign something that says she is aware of the risks...i can't believe the risks of circ were listed on that checklist. some of the judges in this country are worthless.

Most hospitals have consent forms these days.

We checked "no" in a little form at the ob/gyn office and were asked anyway.

So it's a good idea to write a great big "NO" next to the place on the form and not check a box at all?

Yep.
I had a girl in the hospital and got the circ consent form in with the birth certificate and picture forms. No check boxes that I remember, but I wouldn't doubt that there were...

ugh.

That's horrible! During my prenatal care, it was discussed in a "check box" kind of form - at the time we didn't put anything because that was when I still didn't know anything about it and was undecided - but when it came to the actual hospital, it would have been an actual consent form.

How completely sad
I hope this family gets justice (if that is even possible)!

I'm confussed by something. If these parents are really "anti-circ" WHY would they consent to a SECOND one a few days later???

It says they did this because they didn't like the "looks" of the first one. Shoudn't that not matter??? WHY would they put their poor son through this TWICE.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but wonder if they just didn't LIKE the first one and decided to claim they were against it to get some money (as they did from the doctor).

I'm not saying what happened is right, I just don't understand how someone who is against circ would consent to it happening again, especially so soon after the first, when he's so young you know they didn't use any good pain relief. Why not let son decide later if he like the looks of it or not (I'm assuming it was a "loose circ" that so many parents seem to be against these day, meaning pro-circ parents)

: Thank you! That's exactly the way I interpreted the story too. I hope I'm wrong, but if that's the case the only one I feel sorry for is the child. Any $$$ they get should be put in a trust for that child until he's an adult.

Cynicism is a corrosive force.

It must be expelled.

Maybe it was not only not consented to, it was botched as well? Honestly, I don't think it matters. The fact there wasn't decent consent for it in the first place is what matters. I'm horrified not 1, but 2 judges thing a check mark, which could have been made by anyone, is adequate consent for a medical procedure
