For me, it would depend on the condition of the specific car. If it's been well-maintaned, you have less to worry about than if you get a car that's been neglected and then have to pay twice as much on repairs.
When we got the BMW, it was in really good shape, so I haven't put a ton of $ into it. DP did back it into his truck the third day we had it and the freaking tail-light cost $280 (I installed it myself, though, in about 5 minutes) - but if your DH is less clumsy, that hopefully won't be an issue

It would also depend on how comfortable you are fixing things yourself. I've found great car clubs online, which I could never find for my Civic, and I've gotten advice on how to fix a couple small things myself. That alone has cut down on the repair costs considerably.
