Birthday Party?!?!

This sort of goes along with the thread for Gifts for Midwives.

A few weeks ago I was talking to my BIL. They had their 3rd child at home and I was asking him all kinds of questions. During the conversation he told me, "Don't forget to have a birthday party!" A-whaa?!?! He said that after the baby was throughly checked out and everything was cleaned up they all climbed on the bed and had a birthday party which included presents and birthday cake. Everyone that was there participated.

I was wondering if any of you had a birthday party shortly after giving birth. Did you invite other people to come over? And did other people get gifts besides baby? Personally, I kind of think it is silly to have more gifts for baby when all the shower gifts are for the baby to begin with. Is it silly to want gifts for mom, dad, and the midwives? Oh yeah... and what kind of gifts would you suggest for those four?

Well, before the birth of my last baby, I took ds out to "pick out a present" (he was only 2.5 yo). With my help (hee hee) he picked out this little kimono shirt thing and we wrapped it up together. Then I happened to know that he wanted a Buzz Lightyear at the time so I bought that for him and wrapped it up too.

Dd was born at 3am and we didn't wake ds. But the birth high kept me awake until like 10am! When ds woke up he came and met his sister, the 3 of us snuggled and then the 2 of them "exchanged" presents. It was really cute and now even at the age of 5.5 he won't get rid of the Buzz Lightyear his sister gave him. Before I went to bed that morning, my sister and other family members came by to bring gender specific gifts and bring me Starbucks lol!

This time around we will do it again with the participation of both of them. I haven't decided yet if they will do individual presents or one, but there will be a celebration of sorts and ds did ask to have a cake so I will probably make and freeze one that we can have the next day/later that evening.

So, if you call that a birthday party, then yes. That is what we had! Also - my MIL always gets one small gift for the sibling who is NOT having a birthday so maybe that is where we came up with the idea??

That is so wonderful!! I love the idea of having the siblings exchange gifts. What a beautiful thing to think of!!! Thank you.

This will be our first, so unless the cats are going to exchange gifts with the baby it will have to wait until we have another child. : But that is definitely something I am going to keep in mind for next time.

We didn't do gifts, but we did have a cake. In theory, that was going to be a project for my mom and my daughter, but since I went into labor in the middle of the night, and had only a five and a half hour labor, they made it after he was born.
