He's terrified of pooping in the potty

My 3yr ds just started using the toilet and wearing underwear last week. It was motivated on his part....I've been encouraging him, but he's the one who really wanted it. He's doing very well peeing. However, he's frantic when he has to poop!! I offer to sit with him next to the little potty or hold his hand while he sits on the big potty, but he refuses. I've been putting a diaper on him and letting him poop in that. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any ideas????

My son was the same way at 3. What I did, I did this with all my kids, was waited until he was ready. I didn't force it. I would encourage him, but I wouldn't force him. Then, like the rest, one day he decided he was ready and that was the end of diapers. He had only a couple accidents and that was it. I would continue to use the potty when he wants, but keep a diaper or pull up on him for the bowel movements. When he's ready he'll do it.
