Is ppd possible at 12-13 months postpartum?

I quite rapidly started slumping into depression, feelings of profound loneliness, hopelessness, and anger a few weeks ago. This type of thing has never really happened to me before. (No suicidal or thoughts or scary thoughts about the baby though.) After the birth, I had "the blues" but they subsided after a few weeks or a month and all was pretty much normal...until now. I have a hunch it might be hormone related but really have no idea...Can ppd start this late, or is it more likely another type of problem I am having? I have never sought treatment (therapy) so I am pretty clueless. Thanks.

My PPD started at about 2-3 months and started to go away around 8-9- months. But because of the anxiety of returning to work a year after DS's birth it started coming back around 12-13 months. I work from home and trying to get 40 hours of work in a week while wrangling a toddler and taking care of a dog in an apartment while running a household proved to be way too stressful and the depression came back.

We've figured out a way of controlling it, but I believe that an big change in your life could definitely bring on a case of depression whether you'd call it PPD or not.

YES!!! PPD can happen any time in the first year or after. Perhaps you had some of the more subtle symptoms before this. Were you sleeping? Were you anxious? Were you eating normally? Were you having intrusive thoughts? Feeling tired or unmotivated?

I had some really bad anxiety and was not sleeping, but did not realize it was PPD until I found a great therapist who explained that to me. So, yes you could just now be having PPD, or perhaps there were some little things going on before now that you just did not recognize. Either way, try going to www.postpartum.org for more info and for therapists in your area.

Best wishes.

Yes it definitly can. But also, are you weaning? I know some people wean around a year (not exactly sure why, but they do) and that can make you a bit on edge too.

I've wondered the same thing. Asheby is 14, almost 15 months. I had PPD after he was born and I was treated right away. I think I was on Zoloft for about 4-5 months, when I slowly weaned off and was fine. But its baaaaacckk!! It feels exactly the same. And I had a bit of depression before kids, but PPD feels different to me. This feels like PPD.

yes...PPD can start anytime in the first year after birth, and if not caught and treated when it starts to manifest, you may notice it after 12 months.

With my son, I had some symptoms of PPD from the onset of birth, but it didn't get REALLY bad until 6 months. I sought help when he was 7 months old and today he is 9 months old. I feel better now that I have in years. A combination of a baby blues support group, individual therapy, and better living through chemistry (lexapro).

I hope you can get the help you need.
