Should I attempt to knit socks?

I'm a fairly novice knitter, but I'm thinking about making a pair of socks for someone. Are they really hard?

You should ask those sweet mamas up in the yarn crafts section.Beware though...I'm not sure that yarn crafts isn't some kind of cult that you can't escape from.

YES, you SHOULD!

And, yes, knitting socks is a cult all its own!

I would recommend getting the book "Getting Started Knitting Socks". It has such great photos and directions.

Yes! I'm a newbie knitter too, but am knitting my first pair of socks and so far so good, it's been pretty easy. Go to knitty and get their socks 101 for their training sock. It's super easy & fast, so you can learn the method quickly. If you read ahead in their instructions it sounds confusing, but I found actually making the sock and reading step-by-step was easier than it looked at first. This website also has really good instructions.

Absolutely you should Once you've knitted socks you can do anything except cables and lace- so do two more pairs of socks and you can conquer the world

I'm way late on this.. but I say yep! I made my first pair, and had to wing most of it, looking at several differenct patterns, but they still came out great!!

Socks aren't hard at all, the tricky part is reading the pattern. If you can figure it out, you're half way there! The second knitting project I attempted was a sock. And now I am constantly knitting socks for someone!
