ACOG encourages all pregnant women to get prenatal care and to make a birth plan. The main goal should be a healthy and safe outcome for both mother and baby. Choosing to deliver a baby at home, however, is to place the process of giving birth over the goal of having a healthy baby. For women who choose a midwife to help deliver their baby, it is critical that they choose only ACNM-certified or AMCB-certified midwives that collaborate with a physician to deliver their baby in a hospital, hospital-based birthing center, or properly accredited freestanding birth center.

The term lay midwife refers to midwives that are NON-CREDENTIALED! I am studying to be a direct entry midwife but I have credentials. The term means to be uneducated. Also direct entry midwives meet the same end point academically and clinically as nurse midwives they just have different midwifery educational paths. And I do not know of any birth centers run by CPM's or CNM's that will perform a C-section.

And this organization of 52,000 members has many members that are responsible for thousands of unneccessary and barbaric interventions on women and babies. They also have members that are responsible for the deaths of many women and those doctors continue to practice.
I believe what this truly boils down to is money. They are worried that eventually the American population will see the light and start questioning many of the things that OB's do. OB's are surgeons they are trained to do surgery. Why would any normal pregnant woman go to someone trained to do surgery unless she wants a c-section. This is the same as a person with a minor tooth ache going to an oral surgeon. I would not trust ACOG on any statement they make especially since so many of them are outright lies.
