non-plastic toddler dishes?

does anyone have suggestions for some non-breakable dishes for my toddler to eat from? up to this point, i've just been putting food on her (wooden) high chair tray, but she seems to be interested in learning more about utensils and dishes, and i'd rather stay away from plastics. i've been looking on ebay at some vintage metal ones, but i'm not convinced that that's any better. any solutions, creative mamas?

I am a montessori teacher and we encourage the use of real dishes from an early age. I bought the dishes from Ikea when my first was little-dishes, utensils-and amazingly he broke very few of them. They definitely understand being gentle when you let them know they are breakable.

THis is what we use for the kids - mostly only breakfast and snack food since those are a more mobile or anywhere meal. For dinners they use our crockery.

You can always find great deals on small dessert plates at garage sales (like 10 cents a pc). Cheaper than buying coralle and going to a camping store.

Our kids have always used the 'real stuff'. If it breaks (by being thrown down)it is ok as it was cheap

We just use real dishes as well, along with regular silverware. Nothing has been broken yet!

At the Green Festival in Chicago, I learned about a company called Stainless Cups. She sells cups, sippy cups, reusable bottles. I wish she also sold plates, but the cups are nice.

we use metal camping plates. my dp is very clumsy with plates so we do this for him more than for our son. before we switched we went through plates really fast and it was always really stressful because our old plates where ones i had sentimental attachments to.

We don't have special dishes. The kids just use ours, and the casualties in the dinner ware department are usually my fault, not theirs!

We're not truly in a stage of her having her hands on her dishes, but we've loved Sanctus Mundo's stainless steel plate/bowl/cup set. Never have to worry about it breaking, cleans up nicely. I think I found it through lifewithoutplastic.com

Good luck! At least there are a handful of states that have passed legislation to ban BPA. Hopefully that will cause manufacturers to get it out of their processes. (Can't wait for canned foods to be without it!!)

When the time comes I plan for my LO to use regular dishes and or bamboo. All my small plates are from a restaurant that went out of biz so they're super sturdy. I don't anticipate any issues w/breakage, and if they do, oh well, they were free and there's lots of 'em!

we just use real dishes. Cups on the other hand are a problem. We have stainless steel bathroom cups from Bed Bath and Beyond, but DS seems to derive great joy in sticking his hands in them and knocking them over....

We use a little of everything. Some bambu, some stainless steel and some of our own dishware. No casualties yet. As for cups, other than the stainless sippy cup we've been using shot glasses. They seem tough and do the trick. Also pretty cute.

I asked a similar question here a few years ago, and some folks suggested regular dishes. I hadn't even considered it before. Someone said something about kids kind of intuitively knowing they can throw a plastic dish, but that they can't do the same for a breakable dish. I'm sure there are a few kids out there who would throw a breakable dish all the same, but I think most don't. We tried it out, and figured the worst case was that we'd lose a cheap dish or two. She hasn't broken one yet, two years into the "experiment." DH and I, on the other hand, probably break 2 dishes a month (dropping by accident or slipping out of our hands while washing with soap kind of things). LOL.

If you have an Indian store nearby you can find all kinds of stainless steel dishes at reasonable prices. If your child likes his food not to be touching they have sectional plates or you could even buy their own thali plate that has a large platter and several little "katori" bowls which are perfect for snacks or things like yogurt. They also have stainless steel cups.
Happy Eating!:

I am totally.in.love.with these BPA-Free plates? We have a few of them, including the one with the big whale, and it is my daughter's absolute fave. I can get her to eat anything as long as it is served on "the whale plate".
