Not something most mamas would brag about or understand, but...Christopher is 20MO, undiagnosed but delayed, etc. He doesn't talk well, lots of nonverbal communication, but he does say a few words (or at least his version), mostly names, spontaneously. He didn't seem to understand the concept of communication of any kind until about 14 months and sometimes days go by without an actual word from him, and he didn't say "mama" to me until 18 months, so every "new word" is a gift.
His new (last few months) thing is that he likes to turn off the TV. I figured out yesterday, I think he likes the quiet electronic noise it makes when it's off--he lays his head against it after he turns it off. Anyone else's kid do that? I've always been more sensitive to that type noise--I can tell when I walk in a room if there's a TV there without looking, even if it's off, I can hear a little electronic buzz. My other kids and dh don't get it, don't hear that?
Anyway, the kids have all had the flu this week and I am just way short on sleep and drained of energy--so now that they're on the mend, when they weren't needing anything yesterday, I sat down for a few minutes to watch TV with them (I haven't watched anything in about a week and just wanted to relax). Chris promptly got up and turned it off. Repeatedly.
After about the 20th time in 2 minutes, I said (laughing) "You're a little a$$, you know that?" He looked at me for a minute and then said "aaah". Great, I thought, I just taught him a rude word for his limited vocabulary!
He looked at me again, and said "Mama. Aaah" and started laughing hysterically.
His 8YO sister came in to see what was so funny and he pointed at her and said "rooroo aaah" and continued laughing. He obviously understood that he was making a funny!
I was so excited I told dh when I got home that Chris had used his first spontaneous 2-word combination! I even tried to get him to repeat it by calling dh an a$$ but he wouldn't do it again. Yeah, it's not something you want to repeat to just anyone
, but I think it's awfully cool that he understood enough to say it!
