polycarbonate plastic bottles

Thread Starter
I just recently read an article in the November.December 2007 issue of Mothering that has me fuming. Not to long ago, okay about 5 years ago our local health food store began selling polycarbonate bottles to fill with water from their "RO" water machine. My question is what do I do with these bottles now- can I recycle them or just throw them in the trash? So much for trying to do the right thing for my family. I think I am going back to what my grandmother used glass for everything-technology is not always better!

I believe they can be recycled. Were they a deposit system where you can return them? Will the store take them back anyway?

I know what you mean, everything is super frustrating! We have Avent bottles, not many and not often used as I BF and only pump for going to school, and I got them from a couple of people new and they were suppose to be a good brand, etc, etc, and now you find out they are one of the worse for leaching....

Do you mean Number 5 plastic?

I thought that was a decent choice, but it's not?

Apparently it is some of the number 7 plastics.

Number 5 is Polypropylene.

These are like the "Nalgene" bottles, right? I hadn't thought of them being potentiall toxic, but it makes sense. I am so frustrated! I will be chucking these today.... :

Yes, like the Nalgene bottles. Mountain Equipment Co-op, a Canadian retailer, has pulled the polycarbonate Nalgene bottles off the shelf until testing can be done on them and until the government comes back with its testing and decision...
