Hair color

Hi All,

My grey is bothering me and I want to only color with non-harmful color.
Any advice/ideas on what you have tried.
I have medium brown hair that is not salt and pepper yet. When it gets to that, I plan on letting it natural.

TIA Mamas!

It sounds like our hair is a lot alike. I use 100% henna to color my hair. I mix it with extremely hot water & it makes a green, awful smelling paste. I coat my hair in this, massaging to get it to saturate. Then I cover it in a plastic bag & let it sit for 1 1/2 hours. I go so long since my hair is so dark. I use the henna for medium brown hair. It make my hair feel great. It doesn't get my grey back to my original brown. It makes it kind of golden brown. Not red, more golden. I love it. It looks healthy. The only downside is I need to color it every 6-8 weeks, even though I don't. I did it last on Dec 26th. I have been noticing this week that I really need to color again. I've been no-poo some lately, & that makes the color wash out quicker- the baking soda does. I will never use any permanent, or non-natural color again. I had only done that twice before, but I hated it. The henna I use is Light Mountain Natural brand. Look at the ingredients to make sure you get the only henna formula. They also make one that has other ingredients & is more permanent I think.

Henna is normally very time consuming and messy. From what I've read, if you are getting anything other than red from it, it isn't pure henna. Henna is wonderfully conditioning though, so it may be an option... but read up on it first:

You can also do a Henna Gloss which is much more subtle, or a Henna/Indigo Gloss which supposedly gives your grays a nice blond color and the rest of your hair a richer brown. (Do a search for info about that at hennaforhair.com.)

It's important to make sure you use pure, body-art-quality henna on your hair though, which you can read about and purchase at the link above.

Another easier and more subtle option is to use Cassia Obovata - commonly referred to as neutral or colorless henna - to give your grays a more golden hue. I use it along with Chamomile tea and I love it. It makes my grays golden and my light brown hair look richer and healthier.

If you would like to use non-toxic haircolor, you could try Natracolor which gets mostly incredible rave reviews on MakeupAlley.com:

Or Eco Colors from www.Ecocolors.net You may even find a local salon that uses EcoColors. There is an area code search for salons on that site.

www.hennaforhair.com has great products and the website has LOTS of info and pictures of real people. I use a combination of henna and indigo in winter for a darker brown color and just henna in summer for more redness. I love it!
