The Knitted Farmyard- Anyone done this?

I was wondering if anyone else had done a wool knitted farm play mat?
My dd's teacher has asked the parents to contribute to making a knit farmyard playmat that was featured in Living Crafts magazine. I don't subscribe, and amazon was sold out of the winter 08 issue that the project was featured in. So I bought The Knitted Farmyard by Hannelore Warnhard instead. Has anyone made the playmat in this book?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how much yarn I'd need, it doesn't specify how many oz of what to use.

Any guidance would sure be appreciated!
TIA!

I have a copy of the magazine in the car - will dig it out. In that article, each parent made multiple versions of only 1 square and then they shared (so 12 moms made 12 of the same square, then they exchanged and each had 12 different squares to assemble). The end result was super cool!

How much and what you need depends on what square you made. Some were pretty simple - like a plowed field was all one color (brown) with striped ridges, and the oat field was also all one color (golden) with loops. But there was a pond square that had green grass and a blue pond, and there was also a garden square with different color plants.

There are only 3 moms in the class (including me!) who knit. lol
At least we won't have to do multiples of the squares we do make. (I may on mine anyhow so that I can make a playmat for my kids, too.)

Do you have any idea how I can get a hold of a copy of that mag?
Thanks!!!!

Go to livingcrafts.com and you can order the first issue in which it appeared. I'm anxiously awaiting for their second issue to hit the stands!

I have the knitted farmyard and IIRC the playmat in that is actually a hooked rug (or at least portions are), I believe the whole thing was knitted in LC? Anyway, such a great idea. I haven't done it but would love to.

I tried, but the site wouldn't allow me to order the back issue. It would only allow for subscription sign-ups.

Bummer! Did you try sending an email to their information address?

You can call them- the number is 949-650-1061.

I didn't see a way to order the back issue on the site either, but it did say that you can... So I'd call if it was me.

It looks like a fun project!

I have it . . . but another suggestion is your local library. I'm horrible about getting to the PO, but, I do need to go soon if you want to pm me your addy. If you just want the pattern, that is 3 single sided pgs (and I can copy double sided). If you want the article, too, sans pgs with just pics, it's 8 single pgs total.

Honey,
We were just at the library today- no luck.

I would super duper doubly appreciate you sending me some copies, if you don't mind. Or if you have a scanner and email? I can paypal you postage!

Thank you!!!

Reading the title of this thread, I was picturing individual knitted or crocheted farm animals- but it sounds like you're making a flat blanket or mat that looks like a farm YARD.

It would be cool with crocheted animals to put on top of it though!

You're not allowed to photocopy things like that and send them to people. Photocopying is only allowed for personal use, and sometimes not even that. Also, I don't think we're allowed to discuss swaps here...?? Swaps are for the swaps forum...???

This would indeed be cool with crocheted animals!

I don't think "swap" is a four-letter word outside of the TP. I think we are just not allowed to organize or run swaps in other forums.
