I have heard that too. We actually have really hard water. I usually use vinegar in the downy ball for a rinse agent. I don't have any problems. I guess it is worth it to use something more natural without "brighteners" & whitening agents.

Does anyone know of a homemade recipe for pocket CD's? Thanks all for starting this thread. I bought the ingredients the other day and came looking for a recipe. Sooo happy to find this thread! I would love to find something for my BumGenius dipes too.

well, i used the liquid detergent on my dipes, but then heard it's a no-no to use castille soap on dipes. so, i just made the powder one, with the ivory soap, and tried it on my dipes. i cannot believe that 1 tbsp. is enough, for dipes i think 2 would be better (like the pp said, 2 tbsp. for heavily soiled- i think dipes would count in that category!) I'm running the load again with no detergent in it, to see if i put too much soap in the first time. the dipes did smell clean. i'll let you all know! (I still cannot believe that 1 tbsp is enough! i'll probably put 2 tbsp. in every load. for those who've used it before... 1 tbsp? really? and your clothes come out clean?)

Isn't Ivory also soap that can build up on the fleece? I think you need to use detergent (or just the baking soda/washing soda/vinegar). We use a commercial "free" detergent for dipes only. One container lasts months.

well, the dry mix was a success!!! the dipes came out awesome!!! i hope it's not true about the fleece and ivory soap, b/c i love the mix!

btw, you're not suppose to use "free" detergents on dipes, b/c they contain optical brighteners, or so i've heard.

I had hard water at my previous home. My whites came out dingy because it wasn't rinsing out the soap, leaving soap scum residue. Vinegar rinse didn't help either. I had to use Calgon water conditioner.

At my new place where the water is not so hard, I have no issues.

Hmmmm.... I read on the Diaper Hyena (?? I think!) that using detergent is better for cloth diapers because soap kinda builds up on the cloth, making them less able to absorb. I bought a bottle of Seventh Generation bottles detergent and have been using that on the dipes, and the homemade powder for everything else.

Oh, and I have found that for me a 2:2:1 ratio of soap, washing soda and borax works better for me (1 cup, 1 cup, 1/2 cup), but my water is so hard.

I use Ivory soap, because I read on the internet that Fels Naptha contains a couple of "toxic" irritants, and Ivory's cheaper I've also read that some of the other commercial brands (Irish Spring, etc) aren't so good because they have a bunch of additives and Ivory's basically just soap (with tallow, though, eeew... my summer project this year is to learn to make my own soap!)
Unfortunately, I have no links for any of this information, though I do remember (I think!) they were from pretty reputable sources.

Ivory is also awesome as a pre-treatment for stains- rub on, brush with old toothbrush, and voila!

Sorry for yakking! I think about laundry soap a lot.

can you use the dry mix in front-loading washing machines?
I use this recipe

1/3 bar fels naptha
1/3 bar Dr. Bronners
1/2 cup Washing Soda
1/2 cup Borax

Sometimes I add 10 drops TTO for antibacterial property!

Boil 6 cups h2o and then add the ingredients and then put into a tide container and fill the rest of the way with h2o and use 1/2 cap full for a load.

Add vinegar to the rinse load to keep colors bright!!!

I heard that using vinegar in the rinse will help stop a build up of soap in any fabric - dipes included. Have you been trying that?

yes, in some of the loads, although i thought i had heard that vinegar wouldn't stop the buildup. who knows.
