I bought some dpns so that I can make Sheepy Pants. I bought 9". Is that too long?

Well, you could get away with shorter: even 5". Put it that way Whether you made a mistake or not depends on whether the store has a good refund policy...

I like long DPNs, the short ones make me feel like my stitches are going to slide right off (and they have on a few occasions!)

I like the longs ones as well... but I think it just what you get use to using! But then again I'm just a beginer

I like to buy the long ones, also, but mostly that's because I'm kind of cheap and don't want to have to buy another pair should I want to use them for something else (something bigger) in the future.

It's not a problem in the sense that you won't be able to do the project. They might be a little more awkward to use at first, but I also feel like, when I use short ones, my stitches are going to fall off the end... so a little awkwardness is worth it to me.
