I need fellow lactivists!

As I was listening to a loca country station this morning, I was appalled to hear one of the host's reactions when a listener called in and was talking about one of their deer nursing a puppy. He was making "ew" noises and getting all freaked out and talking about hos gross it was and he didn't want to see it. The other host (a female) thought it was sweet and wanted pictures. Please help me show him that broadcasting those opinions isn't acceptable. Here's my e-mail to them and their e-mail addresses:

I generally listen to K95 every day at work and truly enjoy the programming, but I was very disappointed when I tuned in this morning. I got to my desk just in time to hear a listener talking to Tom and Kelley about seeing a deer nursing another animal (maybe a dog?) and Tom reacted by talking about how that was gross and he didn't want to see it.

As a very proud nursing mom, I'm very disappointed that opinions such as Tom's still exist, and even more so that the opinion was expressed to such a large listener base. Nursing is the most natural thing in the world, as evidenced by its occurrence in nature, and is the best food for every baby, whether it's a deer or an infant. Millions of women all over the world make the best choice for their baby and breastfeed, and they shouldn't be shunned or looked at as "gross". There's absolutely nothing gross about nursing, regardless of whether it's a human or animal doing so, and I can't imagine why someone would think that there was. People display skin much more inappropriately every day with low-cut shirts, low-rise jeans, and short shirts.

I truly hope that you will reconsider your comments and look more closely at the very beautiful nursing relationship between a mother and her child. As I said before, breast milk truly is the best for food every baby and has wonderful benefits for both mother and baby. Your morning show has a very serious responsibility to use its influence over listeners wisely, and as such should not express such biased opinions that discourage nursing and further the stigma against nursing mothers.

I will continue to listen to the morning show for the next couple of days, but I do hope that you'll make this situation right by retracting your comments regarding breastfeeding. I cannot continue to listen to a show that discourages breastfeeding, and I'm sure that all of my fellow nursing moms feel the same.

Thank you for your time,
Jenny ******

Tom made the comments. His e-mail address is tom.carey@coxradio.com. Kelley is his co-host. Her e-mail is kelleycash@hotmail.com. Their program manager can be reached at karla.cantrell@coxradio.com. Please take action, ladies!

He's claiming that his comments only pertain to deer breastfeeding a cat, not human moms breastfeeding their babies. I told him that he did not make that distinction anywhere in the conversation.

I got very nice e-mails from their program manager and co-host who were both nursing moms and it appears that it'll be taken care of.
