weight loss at 16 weeks

Thread Starter
Had my 16 week doc appt today. I am down 10 lbs now...and the doc said if I loose any more weight they will have to monitor me. I was so surprised I lost more weight I did not get a chance to ask why it would be a concern, after all, I am still 330 lbs.

The first 12 weeks it was understandable, I felt sick and often couldn't eat after 4 pm. But now I have my eat on... I am not on a diet. I have been eating fries every other day at lunch, and I eat sweets and ice cream - probably in greater moderation than before pregnancy, but I still eat them more than the average person. How is it possible I am loosing weight!? I honestly cannot see myself eating MORE, I would just have to change what I eat to eating crappy foods...and I don't want to do that. Sorry this babe craves cheese, grapes, oranges, and honey mustard dressing on a salad...

Any other mommas have this experience? Any advice? Do I need to worry??

MadiesMommy,

Are you obese? If so, I don't really think it is that big of an issue, it has recently been found safe for obese women to lose weight during pregnancy. You shouldn't have to "over eat" if you feel what you are eating satisfies you and nourishes your body.

I haven't gained any weight yet. Actually I am still down about 7 pounds--which is what I lost in the first trimester. My OB says he isn't the least bit worried.

I would guess that their main concern is that you're not getting a nutritionally balanced diet because of the weight loss rather than any problem the actual loss of fat could cause, but if you're eating a decent amount from each of the food groups, and it sounds like you are, then I wouldn't be worried. If you think you're going to be down some more at your next appointment, you might want to keep a journal of what you're eating to prove that you're giving the little one everything it needs.

I'm quite overweight too, and I am definitely eating better now than before I was pregnant. This kiddo just doesn't appreciate chocolate like I do.

Its completely normal to loose weight during pregnancy if you are overweight. I wouldn't worry about it.

I would worry about an OB that was so uninformed that s/he made it an issue though.

I'm 19 weeks and still down 13 pounds. With dd, I didn't gain any weight until my 5th month and my Dr. was fine with it (I wasn't overweight at that time). With ds, I lost 25 pounds in the first tri and gained it back when I started keeping food down. I'm still sick after most meals, so I don't anticipate gaining it back real soon. My OB hasn't said a WORD about my weight. I was kind of disappointed at my last appointment. I thought she'd at least comment that I'd lost weight. I don't think that weight should be a concern at all during pregnancy unless you're very underweight and losing or any weight and gaining incredibly quickly (and that's only because it could be a side effect).

I lost about 15 lbs in the first trimester, and I'm down another 9 between my Jan and Feb appointments. I'm not worrying about it because my mw doesn't seem to see an issue- ie she hasn't mentioned anything.

I'm a bit on the fluffy side anyhow, so I'm just figuring that since I still have 'baby fat' left over from my last pg (youngest just turned 4!!!!) maybe it's no biggie.

Has whoever's doing your prenatal care said anything about the weight loss? I would ask them at your next appt if it's a concern.
Good luck, mama!

I always lose weight early on. In fact, just last night my OB complemented me on "only" losing 4 pounds with this baby - 10 is usual for me.

I'd say your best defense here is a food diary. Keep track of what you're eating and how much. That should reassure your doc that you're not starving yourself or the baby.
