We also had this issue for 2.5 years and it turned out to be c. difficile. We are now working through encopresis which is an impacted stool where they can also get horrendously stinky and huge diarrhea.
You can ask your doctor over the phone to call in a test for c. diff.
Also probiotics when my son was in the middle of all this seemed to make things worse. Like made him throw up so start very very small with the doses.
Good luck!

Bethany, my youngest son has this problem. We've done the probiotic thing & continue to do so. Something that has helped us (is a bit expensive, though) is hemp milk (really high in iron, too, so that could help your son's low iron levels too, in a natural way). The hemp milk tends to make my son's poop solid, but when we run out, we're back to the sloppy mess. He's only 20 mos & wears a size 5!! (he's short & squatty, but adorable ) & the stuff runs up his back & out the sides. Uggh. The hemp milk is made by Living Harvest and is in 1 qt asceptic pkg (where the unrefrig soy milk is kept & costs about $3/qt)

What is C diff specifically (as I'm interested in asking our naturo to test for this)?

SIGH. Our new pedi (our old fabulous wonderful amazing incredible awesome fantastic wow wow wow ped has retired....) refused to call the lab, he insists upon seeing us first. I do understand, since normally a serious c diff issue can be a big deal. But the nurse did argue a bit with me, telling me I probably need to give him less juice and sugary food and just not worry about it and that if indeed it's a c diff problem then he'd be hospitalized by now with dehydration. Blah blah blah. Mmmmm hhmmmmm.

I think I'm going to take picturs of all his dipes between now and friday morning, AND a log of what he's eating, to help prove that I'm not feeding him crap and expecting him to digest it well. He's even on 60 mg of iron supp daily already, so clearly SOMETHING is amiss inside.
