What yarn do I want?

I'm about to cast on for the first time in almost a year!! I"m doing, of course (!!!) THREE LTK vests for my boys, and I want them to all be complimentary, but not identical. I also do not want to use wool. And since this is my first casting-on event since April of last year, I want it to be nearly ceremonial in nature. This pattern takes 2 play worsted weight, and I've used Lion Woolease in the past, but am not interested in messing with that anymore!

What do you ladies recommend? I haven't even thought about yarn since my youngest was born last July........

Ooh, I like the idea of plant-grown coloured cotton. You could maybe use indigo-dyed cotton for one of them too?
I was going to suggest alpaca, but I don't know if it's cold enough for that where you are?

What about Cotton Ease? It'll be a lighter weight and still machine washable. Or some other type of cotton/arcrylic blend? Thats what I'd personally do since I don't like 100% cotton (to knit with) and it'll still be super durable and pretty affordable. Tammy Tweed comes to mind...

Webs has Aruncania Nature Cotton on sale right now or at least they did last week. I don't know if the colors would work.

I have done one in the lake and lime colors of Cotton Ease. I love Cotton Ease for kid's clothes.

And Tatamy Tweed by Kraemer Yarns now makes a worsted version and is also part cotton part acrylic. I like cotton/acrylic blends for the memory. Neither Cotton Ease or Tatamy Tweed feel like acrylic.

Mmm, cottonease is a good idea. Plain old cotton is too heavy for me, and full out acrylic makes me cringe. NOT cold enough here for alpaca!! Thanks for the suggestions - I've been out of it just long enough to discover I don't even have the right weight yarn to cast on, I can't even get started!!!

yep, cotton ease! I've made scads of them for my boys in cotton ease. They withstand the stain stick that is so necessary on ANY article of my boys' clothing and still look awesome, LOL!
