i posted this in the life w babe section, but i thought you all might have some insight.

dd2 is 4 days old. last night i was holding her and i noticed that her head had a little divot in the back of her head. i was like how did i not notice that before!? (she has an otherwise perfectly round head and this divot is very noticable) then, this morning, it was gone. then, a few minutes ago, it was back -- and now it's gone again! ... my guess is that this is probably normal. i know her skull bones aren't fused yet so it makes sense that they might move around a bit. but this is dc3 and i've never seen or heard of this and i just wanted to see if anyone has had this experience before? would you be concerned about this cranial shifting?

(btw everything else is completely normal -- nursing, pees/poops/sleep/wakeful tim/etc)

I may be missing something, but it sounds to me as though you're just seeing the rear fontanel (soft spot). It becomes more noticeable when the baby is less well hydrated. For a couple of months, we could tell when our daughter needed to nurse because her front fontanel would be depressed. You have a fair bit of experience, though...maybe it's something else? I don't know. Tell you what does/did freak me out a bit...when my kiddo's head would pop like a joint!

Hope everything's fine!

omg, i'm so glad you posted this. i would have never imagined a newborn's head "popping like a joint," but dh was holding dd2 tonight and that's exactly what it did! he said he heard a little *click click* then put his hand on the back of her head and felt the bone shift to the right and down and kind of click back into place. we're both freaked out by this but would have probably panicked if you hadn't mentioned it.

i don't believe dd2 has any hydration problems -- she's having plenty of wet diapers and the fontanel doesn't really feel sunken in. it feels more like the bones just kinda move around a little bit. like, right now they're all in place and her head is round as a baseball, but i can kind of feel a fault line going down the back of her head.

i'm gonna scour for some more info on this and maybe call a midwife i know tomorrow to see what she thinks. any other insight/experience would be great!

eta: dh just pointed out to me that they shift when the back of her head is pressed against our arms when we're holding her. like, it's slightly more up and in when i'm cradling her, then shifts back when i sit her up.

when most babies are born there heads have molded to negotiate you pelvis. did you know that babes have 2 soft spots? the second one is posterior
and feels like a triangle shape, usually whenthe babe is born and for the first couple days u can feel where fontanelles overlapped and then after a while they round out! some people take babes to cranial sacral therapists or chiro to help make these adj. hope this helped
