Hmmmm... meeting with PT today...

Owen had his second day of PT today (not counting the eval). The PT talked to me a bit afterwards and kind of surprised me. She said that his left side is noticably weaker than his right side. Honestly- I never noticed. He can't kick a ball with his left leg. He can't throw a ball with his left arm. (He can do both, to a degree, with his right side). He can't stand on his left foot without holding onto something/someone (he can for a few seconds with his right leg, though that's still delayed). She said he was having a hard time holding himself up on his hands/knees (think baby crawling position). Then she asked if he was a big crawler as a baby. And I felt like I'd been hit over the head, finally. No, he was not. He had, what we called, an army crawl. He drug his left side while using his right leg/arm to propel himself across the floor. Even at that, he didn't do it much. He was much more into rolling and then walking than he was crawling.

And I never even thought twice about it.

Duh.

Hindsight is 20/20, eh? Should have known 3 1/2 years ago that something was up

Good job, mom.

Oh Steph, don't beat yourself up. Lots of kids army crawl straight to walking and don't have any major issues. It's good you're getting it checked out now.

DD's PT keeps talking about trunk weakness. Trunk weakness, trunk weakness, trunk weakness . . . . We're doing everything we can to work on it, but sometimes it's just the way things are. I was a chef for 15 years and have significant weakness in my left arm - I found a way to make it work.

Not that you don't want to pursue treatment, just know that it's likely something that he will either outgrow or adapt to.

...and, looking at that picture of him, seems he's pretty capable, huh?
