Well, I don't really have a kiddo in this age group right now, but I thought some of you could look back and give me some help. DS will be 3 in April and has been PL'd since he was 2. He greatly prefers to stand and pee into the big toilet. This was never a problem until I had another baby. I have reached my wits end with it. It seems like every time I sit down to nurse her, he needs me to come help him pee. Is it too early to expect him to be able to aim into the toilet? When did it happen for your son?

I seem to recall that when DS1 first started standing up to pee, he would stretch his arms and grab the top of the tank so he was leaning over the toilet bowl. He looked pretty funny, but it made it so he really couldn't miss
He didn't do that until well past 3, mind you.

My ds never really sat down to pee. So I guess the answer is when he potty trained which was the day after his 3rd b'day.
My son is tall and he just kinda leans over the toliet, if that makes sense. He aims well and has never missed or made a mess. Maybe you could show your son how to lean over the bowl? I've also heard of putting a wad of TP in the toliet and making a game of aiming at it.

Ds was potty trained (no learning about it, he was dragged into it!) at 3 years 4 months and could stand from that time. He is, however, quite tall for his age (90-95th percentile).
Could you get him a step stool to stand on, throw some cheerios in the toilet for him to aim at and work on it that way?
it's not coincidence that he needs you to help him whenever you sit down to nurse - I'm sure he's feeling needy then too, and this is probably the one thing he knows that you will leap up and do. I'm wondering if you could find another way to 'help' him while you nurse. A special nursing box that you take out with things for him to play with next to you?

How tall is your son? Is he standing on a stool or on the ground? I know my DS went through a stage where he was too short to just stand on the ground, but if he stood on a stool, it made him so tall that he had a hard time aiming.
During that phase, I just put a phone book in front of the toilet so that he had something to stand on that didn't make him too tall -- it was pretty hard for him to miss when his penis just barely reached over the rim of the toilet.
The only other thing that's made him "spill" is forgetting to put the seat up, so we went through a couple of weeks where, every time he headed off to the bathroom, I said, "Remember to put the seat up" and it became habit for him -- no more bathroom spills for us!

I also like the floating Cheerios idea. I think I'll try that tomorrow.

My ds trained at 2-1/2 years and stood from the start. He did use a stool at first. I'm sure there were a few misses but nothing too bad. Good luck!

DS2 started standing at about 3 and so far has pretty good aim.
DS1..... he's 10 and I don't monitor his peeing anymore
...... but MAN when he was younger, that kid couldn't have hit the water if he'd fallen head first into the toilet
