We have had both big and small and they have both cost rouphly the same.
One year we had all his friends over for a pokemon party that I planned myself-homemade games, homemade cake, homemade pin the tale of pikachu, etc. Decorations really cheap from ebay. No gift bags just stickers that came with the decorations. I had drinks/snacks for parents who stayed, etc. It was *huge* and so, so much fun!!
Another year we kept it small but I did a fancy store bought cake, mylar balloons, craft style gift bags (no junky toys or cheap candy). All in all there were maybe 10 people total *including* the parents who stayed. Same thing it was a blast!
i think both them were equally memorable
For his 7th b-day this year we are keeping it small- 7 friends for a pool party. The big expense will be hiring 1 or 2 life guards. Other than that I just plan on having drinks and snacks. No goodies bags, maybe a few baloons for decorations but that is it.
