Nursing a Sexually Wounded Culture

A Catholic friend sent me a link to this article by Christopher West that made some really good points about how the sexualization of our culture has harmed people's view of breastfeeding.

I especially liked this paragraph:

Quote:
"St. Paul hit the nail on the head when he said, “To the pure all things are pure, but to the impure nothing is pure” (Ti 1:15). It is a tragically impure world that labels the purity of a baby at the breast as “gross.” For those with the purity to see it, a nursing mother is one of the most precious, most beautiful, and most holy of all possible images of woman. . . . In fact, it is a heavenly image. . . .

I think of that verse often when I hear about moms being persecuted for NIP. Thank you for sharing!

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us that we would see in every nursing mother an image of you feeding the Christ child.
the first time i nursed in church, i waited and waited for someone to tell me not to so that i could ask them how they thought Jesus got fed! This is a much gentler way of saying that.

nobody did say not to, though i think anyone around me would have figured out what i was doing. we're still a little clumsy at getting latched...

anyway, a lovely article. thanks for sharing this.

I've nursed lots of times in various churches, and have never had anyone say anything to me about it. Church was actually one of the first places I felt comfortable NIPing, because the lights were dim and everybody was either looking up front or closing their eyes, not looking at me.
