What do Midwives do?

I know what midwives do of course, but in your own words how would you describe what a midwifes role?

I worked with one midwife who said she was a "professional nag." She said this because she spends a good deal of her time encouraging people to eat better, take care of themselves, etc....

I think that midwives are educators and encouragers. I also feel like they are sorta like lifeguards-- standing by ready to jump in to help only if needed.
