is this a blood test or a vag swab?

Hopefully someone can help me out here, I'm reading over my bill from a lab for a prenatal workup, and they have a charge for N Gonorrhoeae, amp probe - I know that's a gonorrhea dna probe, but I thought that was usually done with a vaginal swab, can they do it with a blood test now? It's curious because my mw never did any VEs, so there couldn't have been a vaginal culture taken. I don't want to pay $80 for a test I never had.

Urine test. Or it may have been miscoded.

She should have told you if she was going to run an $80 urine test for gonorrhea, considering you might have taken the approx. $12 swab option if given the choice. We *never* do the more expensive tests on cash-pay clients without thoroughly discussing it w/ them.

I have insurance so I am paying a % of the $80 (it all adds up), but she still should have told me. she did say that she was going to run a urine culture and I gave a sample, but I didn't ask and wasn't told specifically what it was being cultured for. Frankly I didn't even think to ask, and it never occurred to me, because everything came back normal, until I got the bill. I think it's just a case of communication break down.

It makes sense that it was a urine culture. I just thought that the lab may have charged me for everything in a 'standard' prenatal work up, and I didn't want to get billed for something I didn't have. but if it was a urine culture I did have the test.

Well, I'm glad you're not stuck paying the whole $80, that's for sure, but you're right, she should have asked you regardless.
