Anybody weave baskets?
I grew up in a family of women weavers and up until now I've been to crazy busy too take it up, and to separated from anyone who weaves! Its not so common these days, especially not in the city. Anyhow Im interested in talking to people who do. I'll be moving to Portland Oregon this summer/fall and hopefully I can get started back up when I'm there.
I'd love to hear about any weavy women out there! Especially in Montreal or Portland.

Hi, I just started a thread this AM with the same title. I have been weaving for years and absolutely love the craft and the product. The woman I went to for classes has stopped teaching and now I am looking to find an economical way to buy supplies and pick it up again. I am going to attempt to re cane a childs rocking chair seat...hoping this project will get me back to weaving. Too bad we live on opposite coasts, good luck finding a mentor.

haha, wow I love that posted with exactly the same title. Thats amazing.
Good luck to you too. Its kind of obscure outside of say, the native community. I am doing a mother blessing ceremony next month for a girlfriend and I would love to somehow incorporate weaving into it, or weave something for a gift but I dont think Ill make it that far that quickly. Supplies are an issue for me, in the city esp. Let me know how everything goes

Well I just placed an order for caning supplies so I can try that. I am going to weave a new seat for a childs antique rocking chair. Check out www.basketmakerscatalog.com they have tons of beginner kits you could try. They seem pretty quick to get orders out, so that could work for you.
Nice to hear from you so quickly.

I haven't done any basket-weaving in years, but I love it. Thank you for the link... like I needed another hobby to spend money on.

Awesome! Thanks for the link. I shall now go see how expensive my family tradition is......

When I was taking classes, I would pick a basket and then added $15 class fee to that. The kits available thru the catalog seem really reasonable in comparison. It can definitely be an expensive habit though. Oh and I placed an order for caning supplies for a chair seat, they shipped priority the day I called...it should be here tomorrow I am going to teach myself how to do this...wish me luck. And keep me posted as to how things progress for you.
