What do babies wear...

This to me feels like an INSANE question, obviously I know that babies wear clothes just like grown ups do. Here's the thing tho, I know what to put on babies in the fall and winter... but what do you put them in in the summer. My house has window a/c's so it's not the most climate controlled... the rooms we spend all our time in have their own, plus celing fans and we're planning on buying one for baby's room too, but don't know if it's even necessary if we keep the door between it and the room next to it open, since it has a ceiling fan. Do they still sleep in little sleepers? What about going out... I don't want baby to be over heated... but I also don't want to buy all kinds of clothes that I'll never use.

Ok this is me worrying about goofy things today...

DD slept in sleepers during the summer in AZ...at first I was just keeping her in a onesie in the house but it was strange to me that she always wanted to be outside in the 115+ degree heat and then I realized that she was too cold in our house, so we started keeping her in sleepers during the day. If we went out I would just put her in a onsie with legwarmers and a blanket if we went into a store.

HTH!!

My youngest was born Aug 1st. He spent most of the time in a light-weight baby bag type outfit, or a onesie on really hot days. His feet and hands seemed to stay just right that way. You can always use a blanket to wrap baby in inside where the a/c is, and a little hat.

DS was born at the end of May and it was already warm here. He spent a lot of time in a t-shirt and a diaper that summer. I really liked those little gowns with the elastic on the bottom for sleeping in--made diaper changes easy. Don't forget hats are very important in the summer!

We always used baby gowns with my DD. She was born in a minnesota summer, so hot and humid, and we had no A/C. I think ceiling fans aren't recommended for bay rooms, but that may have changed in the last 4 years. I do have to say though, once DD was about 3 months old she would sweat like a hog and basially lived in just a onsie and socks.

I don't know how hot it will be this summer, but when my son was born, there was a heat wave, and the temperatures averaged in the 90s F until he was about 6 weeks old in mid-September. So most of the time, he just had on a t-shirt and a cloth diaper at home. If it were a little cooler at night, we put him in a sleeveless cotton sleepsack too, but it was usually too hot for that. We have only one room with air-conditioning though, and only use it when we have company; the rest of the time we use fans. I think we kept socks on his feet the first week, and open crochet booties when we were out. We had him in a sling when we were out, so a t-shirt was usually enough, though we did occasionally put on coordinating pants if other people were going to hold him.

Dress them the same way you are dressed. I've had two summer babies and they mostly just wore a diaper at home but we didn't have an A/C. Depending on the temp of the A/C just a shirt would probably do fine, perhaps some very light weight pants.

My son was born on Sept 1. That's still late summer here, with temps in the low 90s or so. We have AC in the house, though.

He wore summer-y clothes, like the one piece outfits that are shorts, for about the first 6 weeks. Lucky for me, that's when he outgrew his 0-3 clothes and was able to move onto the 3-6 month clothes, which were more fall-ish. I dress babies in outfits because I don't like onesies. I especially hate the look of onesies plus pants. YMMV.

At night, I would put him in sleepers. It cools off at night in the late summer here to maybe in the high 70s.

i'm planning on just a t shirt and diaper. or no diaper and either bare bummed or just some baby shorts or something(we'll be doing ec). i hate onsies. i cut all the bottoms off of dd's and used them as t shirts. lol we only have a little window air conditioner in our house that we barely use. i can't tollerate it cool in the summer. give me the heat! lol

i don't remember what i put on ds. dd was a winter baby and lived in sleeper gowns. i think we'll just go with watever we're most comfortable in at the time.

Thats so funny to me... my may baby lived in a cute onesie with matching pants - we probably had 10 or so onesies and maybe 4 pairs of pants, and she wore them all summer and even longer around the house. (We're in WA so the temp changes drasticly from day to day...)

We also had a few little sun dresses that were nice too.

Isn't it funny how we all have different opinions on this kind of stuff?

Hehe, DS was about say six months old when it started getting hot, and we basically stayed in just a diaper, or naked. We also went outside nekkid (well, HE did! We have neighbors!)

We keep our a/c at about 75-78, so the most he ever wore was a t-shirt.

Then again my DS is very hot natured. I'll be in the bed next to him, in full long sleeved PJ's, under a thick comforter and quilt... and he'll be in just a diaper, kicking off his covers, still hot and sweaty. Weird.

Oh... if you're CO SLEEPING... wear less! S/he'll have a human incubator right there and it's easier to overheat

On a related note, what sizes is everyone buying? I've bought only one NB outfit ($1 at the thrift store and too cute to pass up) because I have a feeling this little girl will be a fairly large baby and I don't want to buy stuff she won't be able to wear more than a week or two. Beyond that, our "stash" is about half 0-3 months and half 3-6 months, with a few 6-9 month sleepers thrown in for good measure. Is it really a big deal if clothes are a bit big those first few weeks?

good question...

OP, that's actually a really good question. I hadn't thought about that yet... but we already have one boy and one girl so I'm sure I'll be able to find something that I can use during summer. Besides, my brother and sil have 4 girls and 1 boy and we swap clothes all the time.

I think I'll probably be getting some cute t-shirts or onesies based on gender and maybe some new booties and socks (because I always seemed to loose one of the pair...). But that's about it as far as clothes.

I wanted to try bw and cd this time around so if I spend any major money, it'll be on that.

My son never fit in 0-3 clothes; I think I was already putting him in 6-9 months before he was three months old; no one ever believed me when I said he was a newborn in the early weeks. Most of the 0-3 clothes he had were from a cousin, so I gave them back to her and she sent them on to the next baby. I'm having a lot of trouble envisioning having a baby small enough to fit in 0-3 sizes. I think everything we already have is 3-6 months or larger. If I can find some of those elastic-bottom gowns that are 0-6 months, I might buy those.

as for sizes, if this one is anything like my other two, i'll just have a couple 0-3 month sizes and get out mostly 3-6. both of mine grew so fast they were out of newborn clothes in about a week or two. (they were 7.1 and 8.9 at birth) i know all babies are different, but i'm just going on past expierence here.

to me, it's not a big deal for them to wear things a little big in the beginning. as long as they are not swimming in it. i hate to have anything tight on them anyway.

Well the first few days they aren't good at regulating their own temperatures so I usually dress them in something cool w/ a blanket or just in a wrap. But the general rule is that they are going to be comfortable in what you would be comfortable in. Also it seems we were in nb clothes about 2 weeks, 0-3 a few weeks and then 3-6 about a month then on to 6-9 for 2 months then to 12 months by around 4 months. Yes, my children grow super fast, must be my milk

I plan on doing t-shirts and wool soakers most of the time. I always keep a blanket as well for cold stores and family that has their air turned up We don't do too many onsies b/c we use fitteds and PF's most of the time

That has always been my rule as well. What am I comfortable in? We have A/C, but keep it set pretty high, usually about 85. Our house may be 88 during the day in July. We're comfortable in that, especially since we're spending most of our time outside and using the pool. Now guest think it's terrible that anyone would have A/C and endure that heat. (I on the other hand am cold at temps below 70) We generally turn it down for their comfort.

Our kids are always in just diapers, onsies, little tank dresses, or something like that in the warm months. They hardly ever use any PJ's in the summer. If we kept it set lower and the A/C was cool at night we would certainly use gowns or sleepers.

DD2 was born in April when we were having 95 degree temps. The head nurse at the hospital commented as she was discharging us that she was thrilled we had her in a little dress and short sleeves, as she hates to see newborns bundled from head to toe when it's 90 out. It's a little peeve of mine too.

I have no clue what size this babe is going to be, but not much less than 9 lbs, if my last 2 girls are any indication. We probably won't buy much 0-3. A few outfits to go out in and some cotton onsies are my focus. I'm leaning more toward buying 3-6. (Yes, we do have lots already, but I just have to buy some new! )

my son was a preemie so he wore NB size for a long time (after he got out of preemie)

I was thinking about this, too. My dd is an October baby and ds is late August. It had started to get really chilly the day I went into labor with dd, and it was hot about a month after I had ds. I know dd was bundled, but ds hung out in cute onesies or rompers. As for size...pffft I don't know. I've been picking up some cute unisex gowns or really lightweight sleepers at thrift stores. I'm going anywhere from preemie to 3-6 month. My dd was 8#14oz, but everybody thought she was a preemie because she was all muscle and no fluff. She swam in 0-3 month until she was a few weeks old. Ds was 6#10oz and he was in preemie for a few weeks, then in 0-3 for another few weeks. I think he stayed on track with sizes until about 6-9 months, when he started slowing down and fit in 12 month for almost a year. I'm buying very little before this baby is born. I can always get more, but it's hard to take it back.

Inside my July baby was in the same type clothing as my October baby because we have AC and we live in ND where it doesn't get to be extremely hot. When we took the summer babe outside he would wear onesies and light pants with bare feet.
