Which is the lesser of two evils?

Composite filling or stainless steel?

I have to choose. My dd's surgery is in three weeks. I'm working with a pediatrician, a holistic dentist and a pediatric dentist. The holistic dentist does not use stainless steel at all, so that tells me something right there. On the other hand, there is so much in the news right now about Bisphenol-A being a potential endocrine disrupter.

I had my dd tested to see if she is allergic to nickel (the problem metal in stainless steel). If that's negative, which would you choose? These appear to be my only 2 choices.

I have never heard of stainless steel fillings before. One of my best friends is in the dentistry field, and she says that metal fillings last a lot longer than the composite ones--she says that composite fillings will break down, shrink away from the tooth, start causing discomfort and need to be replaced within about 7 years, especially in a molar. She is very health-conscious and is interested in alternative medicine, and she says that if she had to choose between amalgam and composite she really doesn't know which she'd choose--especially in a permanent tooth for a child.
