Chess?

I'm not 100% sure where to post this so trying here.

My son is 6 and attends a public school, he joined the chess club and at the encouragement of the coach he entered his first chess tourney yesterday. He had a lot of fun and really wants to keep doing this. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for web sites or books to learn more about chess?

I know the basic rules and my son can beat me about 50% of the time. Sooooo...I'm going to be pretty useless as far as helping him soon so I wanted something that we could learn together.

Thanks to the magic of Google:
http://www.chesskids.com/
http://www.chessguru.net/
and http://www.chess.com/

The second two look more like something that you'll need to read and digest for presentation to your son.

Really though, I'm betting if you improve your game he'll learn just by playing you.

My two suggestions would be chesskids.com and buying some decent chess software if you haven't already. Chessmaster is a really good program and you can often get it cheap on ebay - there is no reason why you need the most current edition because they all have plenty of bells and whistles.

Thank you both for the links. We have the Chessmaster PC game and play each other over the LAN plus he plays the computer. I'll check out the websites and we'll have some mom and son chess education time.

My ds took a class at the community center when he was 6. We paid attention so we could learn too! (They encouraged the parents to do that!) Even dd (4) learned how. They can beat me !

I second the chessmaster suggestion. My dh is a chess expert and has done lots of coaching and teaching of chess. He is a big fan of chessmaster for a self-motivated learner. They have lessons and puzzles and games ranging from the beginner level all the way up to grandmaster level. My 6 yo dd really loves doing it, (she is still at beginner level....but is learning rapidly. Dh even says that soon she will be able to be ME! )
