need knitting advice for a mama poncho.

So I don't knit. I know alot of crafty things, and I have tried knitting, but I have yet to complete a project. I keep screwing up the tension. but that is okay because my mom knits and my cousins knit. and my mom has aggreed to make me a mama poncho from the little turtle knit pattern http://www.littleturtleknits.com/pag...ltpatterns.php (just scroll down.) just that she said she would give the end a border in some fluffy stuff.

What I need to know is has anyone made this pattern before? I want the poncho to be pretty warm but light and look sophisticated. not too crunchy. more like the original dutch mama poncho http://www.mamaponcho.ch/ponchoinfo_EN.html

I was thinking of some merino wool or some wool silk blend.

can anyone give me suggestions, has anyone done it before. does anyone have a mama poncho (dutch one) and could they tell what weight the yarn it uses.

I had a mamaponcho...if I recall it was a heavier worsted weight, if not bulky. But it really doesn't matter, the way the pattern is written you can choose whatever yarn you want.
I wouldn't choose a wool/silk blend; I'd use 100% wool. Merino would be nice and soft. I'd also consider whether I'd want it washable....I'd want to be able to toss it in the wash if baby spit up.

do not use a wool/silk blend, please, please, PLEASE!! It will stretch and drag like a newly postpartum belly, LOL! It really will not be pretty. I'd go for a 100% wool, or a wool/arylic.

I would do peace fleece ww. I think that would be awesome- I might have to make one too!

and definitely chunky? I was thinking of a DK weight? that would be too thin?

and what is peace fleece?
