Yep, pony tails are fine when the girls are young; things are so informal then. If she does continue to study ballet, there may come a time when a bun will be required, especially for exams and for completing multiple turns without getting her eyes slashed by her own whipping hair.

The Fort Knox of all buns, at my ballet school anyways, was to pull the hair straight back into a pony tail, then braid it, tie the braid with an elastic, wind it around the base, throw a doubled-up/tripled-up hair net over it, and THEN puncture the base with long bobby pins. If the hair isn't long enough to be braided, then just wind the pony tail and slip the hairnet over it (it gives it a nice finish).

As for lying in the floor with a bun, all the dancers I knew just got used to having their heads supported by their buns.
