What happened to the caterpillar?

When we read The very hungry caterpillar, 3.5 yo DS keeps asking me, "What happened to the caterpillar?"

I said "He turns into the butterfly."
DS repeats, "What happened to the caterpillar?"
I said "he makes a cocoon and goes inside and his body changes into a butterfly."
DS doesn't get it. So I tried a simplified version, saying the butterfly is the caterpillar, just with wings on it..... I want to explain it, he really wants to know, but when I do he doesn't understand and just keeps asking again. Suggestions?

can you find a simple book on butterflies????

that's how it worked with dd....

or look it up....????

i told dd that cat's need to eat a whole lot bc then they go to sleep for ahwile and make a cocoon (wrapped her up in a blanket) to grow into something beautiful (i made paper wings and taped them to her when she woke up)....i had her open her arms in the "cocoon" and then put the wings on her....afterwards, we read the small book on butterflies...and went online and showed her some pics...

there are live butterfly kits you can order online and they're really inexpensive. PM me if you want more info. It was a really fun project for us.
