Sock Yarn

I think I'm ready to try knitting a pair of socks. I have this pattern. I remember seeing an easier one too, but but can't find it. Anyways I went to Jo-Anns last night and can not find any good fingering weight yarn, just some made out of nylon, and it was gross looking. Where can I find good sock yarn?

Do you have a local yarn store? That would be the best place to fnd all kinds of gorgeous sock yarns.

I agree, LYSes are the best place to go sock-yarn shopping so you can see them up close and personal. However, sock yarns are pretty pricey. So for your first pair you might want to consider using a less-expensive worsted-weight yarn. Wool-Ease is what I learned sock knitting on, and it is great for that purpose, IMO. It's part wool for a nice feel, but mostly acrylic for durability. There are a couple of reasons to consider a ww yarn -- it will be easier to see your stitches as you learn the various parts of sock construction, and they will work up a LOT faster than a pair made with fingering yarn and size 0, 1, or 2 needles -- so you will see results faster and possibly avoid being discouraged by the sometimes-glacial pace of socknitting.

Check out this site for a list of great sock patterns arranged by weight, pattern, recipient, etc. Or www.socknitters.com has lots too, including a few more tutorials.

HTH!

I agree! I have many pairs of socks and have never used "sock yarn"- I started out with wool-ease and still make socks for some family members with it, but really love using worsted because I like THICK socks!
