Chapstick

Ok, question on chapstick... my dd has very dry lips, and is constantly picking at them, so of course they bleed and then scab up, etc. and it's a vicious cycle. I'm concerned about putting chapstick on her lips... I had bought Burt's bees and that seemed to be pretty good, but she insists on putting this stuff on quite a bit during the day. Any other chapsticks out there that might be better/safer, or is this one pretty good? I can't seem to get her to break the habit right now, so I'm hoping putting something on there will make them at least softer and heal them so she stops...

Burt's Bees has peppermint oil in it. It is very irritating to lips that are already enflamed. Peppermint oil can be soothing in some cases. But to me & DDs it is not. It makes my lips worse. There are so many companies trying to copy BB right now. It is hard to find a good one. I use a vitamine E stick on us. It works great. We apply a huge layer at bedtime. This gives them time to heal while they are asleep & not picking at it. We also just rub on jojoba oil or coconut oil sometimes.

That is a great suggestion! Never even thought about peppermint oil in the other stuff. Thank you!

i really like weleda everon stick for lips. i use that, burts bees & coconut oil (whichever is handiest at the time) the everon is great but it isn't as slippery as bb's so you have to rub a little harder. It took a minute to get used to and now I adore it. HTH

A slathering of lanolin (like Lansinoh, like is used for sore breastfeeding nipples) at bedtime does wonders. You can get tiny tins of lanolin at my HFS, but it's easy enough just to use it from the tube. It really helps the skin heal quickly.

i 2nd the lanolin...i feels wonderful on chap'd lips, i insisted on having it around for my hb. another unexpected one is the lotion bars from chagrin valley are the best. no fragrance but mine smells like chocolate from the cocoa butter. yum .

If you are looking for something that is portable for when you are out and about, then I can't say enough good things about Unpetroleum products. Love them!

I like Burt's Bees. I have also used Shea Butter in the solid form.

Poor kiddo! We use Jess' Bee Natural tangerine lip balm. So yummy! It's very smooth and creamy, and it feels (and tastes!) wonderful. Here's the list of ingredients:

Quote:
Beeswax: Solidifies and seals other ingredients
Tangerine Oil: Refreshing taste.
Vitamin E: Heals and repairs
Shea Butter: Shea butter is similar to cocoa butter. It is derived from the nut of the fruit of the Shea tree. It looks and feels like butter. People who have nut allergies and latex allergies may be sensitive to shea butter
Sweet Almond Oil: a great nutrient for softening and conditioning the skin. It contains glucosides, vitamins and minerals this scent free oil is obtained from the nut of the tree.
Hmm... think I'll go put a bit on....

Thanks so much for everyone's advice, I ordered some of that Jess' Bee Natural a few minutes ago and I'm going to try the lanolin too, all these suggestions are great!

Not all Burts Bees chapstick has pepperment. I have three, the original does have pepperment, I have honey (which I don't really like, smells like baby powder or something) and pomegranet (which is my favourite). Lanolin sounds good too though
