Edit: I'm not allowed to discuss night nursing on a Spirituality thread. If you'd like to hear my LDS friend's experience with two daughters having bad teeth rot, please PM me.
DH and I are feeling very blessed. He got a major, major raise at work (one he probably should have gotten a good year or two ago...he's been very
underpaid, and not one to complain/push for a raise, but at the same time he is very important to his company for his general knowledge on their technology, especially since the others with the same knowledge left the company last year, leaving only him). We're really looking forward to not only paying off our credit card bill (which includes the $2k transmission work we had to do early last month), but also finally replenishing our savings account. We've had just barely over $300 in savings for at least a year now, which is absolutely nervewrecking, were something to go wrong. And of course, having some money in savings, and a higher salary, will make it easier for us to relocate when we're ready - he'll be able to ask for a higher salary at a new job, we'll have moving costs covered if we need to pay for our own move, and HEY- maybe
we can even start to build up a down payment for a home someday! But I'm finding it extremely difficult to not RUN OUT and buy new furniture right this instant.
I'm horribly embarrased to have people over at our house. Our couches (which we bought cheap in the first place) are 8 years old, have crazy staining all over them, have fabric tearing in several places (dangerous springs poking out and all), and are sagging like mad. None of our furniture matches, either, not in the least. It would be so so so nice to have at very least a new set of couches, ones less prone to staining, marker damage, etc. It's a good thing that DH keeps reminding me how important a healthy savings is.
And also, the timing just feels so nice, just 5 weeks before my due date...not having to worry about extra costs that a baby could potentially cause.
Ohhh, and I was talking to my friend (same one I talked about above), and you know that government tax rebate everyone is getting in a few months? Her and her DH decided to use it ALL on food storage! I thought that was so neat. We have practically no food storage. Just a couple boxes of stuff my IL's gave us, I think it's 72hrs worth, that are acting as a bedside table right now.
I really admire how quick she is to use extra money for things that the Church advises us to have, though, compared to how quick I am to think of all the temorporal, relatively unimportant things I'd like to buy. I should probably subject myself to reading a lot of church talks about living humbly and saving for a rainy day, right?
Next wed. is the Cub Scouts Blue & Gold dinner - our ward is doing a Chinese New Year theme. Our family (since DH is a cub scout leader, the whole family is invited) has been asked to bring a vegetable dish to go along with the theme (the ward is providing an undefined meat dish, and egg rolls). Anyone familiar with chinese veggie dishes? About the only thing I've ever actually tried
is buying a package of frozen stir-fry veggies and sauteeing them with stir fry sauce. I found a few interesting sounding recipes online, but I've never tried any of them. So I just thought I'd ask if any of you have any recipes you love that would fit the bill.
