Eating Placenta that sat out and then was frozen

cross-posted from the UC forum:

After my ds was born in Nov I wasn't sure if I needed to eat any placenta, so I didn't. He was attached to it for about 36 hours, and then after we cut the cord it sat out for probably 12 more hours before dh stuck it in the freezer. I wouldn't normally eat meat I had left out like that, but I am dealing with some ppd and am wondering if eating some placenta would help.

have I missed my chance? is it unsafe now? no longer nutritious?

I wish I had been able to salvage mine...personally I would follow your intuition on this one....maybe try just a tiny bit and see how you feel after etc. I also wouldn't personally count the time that it was still attached to your son. You can also dehydrate it or cook it and still gain some extra nutrition that way if the raw part worries you. But really I would trust your intuition.

I would go for it!

Mine is in the freezer also lol.

From what I understand they will maintain their *special* properties for a while. Even if they loose some by dehydrating, being frozen, or by being cooked, it's still benefical and better than nothing!

As far as it sitting out, I have no clue on that one. Sorry!

the concern over meat that has sat out for a while is bacteria. if your gut is healthy you would have less to be concerned with over that.

In my experience with this last birth, if i did not have bone broth several times a week i would decend into PPD, Vit B, magnesiuim, fish oil also helped. if I would slack off on vitamins i would feel it.
