cloth wipes

Seeing as we'll be using cloth diapers this time around, the thought occurred to me that we might as well be using cloth wipes as well. I'd like to buy a couple of meters of whatever fabric I'll be using and just serge around the edges....

What fabrics work good for cloth wipes? How many layers thick do you make them? Do you ever mix fabrics (different on each side?)

Thanks in advance,
mel

I like 100% cotton- t-shirt on one side for softness, flannel on the other for poopy butt-cheeks

And personally, I don't like "purchased" fabric for wipes-- I like bits of old sheet, old pjs, and t-shirts. I think they absorb and clean better (kind of like the difference between a well-washed bath towel and one that is super-fluffy, brand new)

I use 2 layers of flannel, or flannel and thin terry, or velour and flannel. Just about anything I have left from diaper making with flannel on the other side. I love the old flannel sheets! Those are usually thicker.

My current favorites are bamboo/cotton fleece or cotton fleece. Those soft little bumps are great for cleaning up messes.

I have made double sided flannel ones serged together and hemp fleece/flannel ones.

I use 2 layers of flannel zigzagged together, or one side fleece or flannel and the other side terry cloth for poops.

I made some that are flannel (clearance rack remnants because I had it) and some remnant rack Sherpa (polyester blend) that work well. The Sherpa is grabby and the flannel is soft.

I just cut up a piece of flannel (no serging). I find that other wipes are too thick to clean easily in my daughter's "crevaces", but the flannel is cheap and easy. Actually, I bought a yard of it, then I wanted some more and I realized I could just cut up some old recieving blankets that we don't use (we have tons of them, some nicer than others). I love them... way better than the "sample" ones that I got from various diaper stores.

We use single-layer flannel for nose-rags and such, and I used to use them for bum-wipes, too. But I found that I needed something with a bit more "ooomph", so I bought a couple of those "15 for $5" packs of washcloths, and use those.

i make mine an 8 x 8 size, and use a flannel/flannel or flannel/baby terry. the flannel/terry combo is great for those sticky newborn breastfed poops. i wish i had a serger cuz these would be so much quicker to make, but i just turn and topstitch and they turn out great

size

I made some wipes this weekend and it seems like 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 is a good size. Matches the size of the samples I bought at a diaper store last week.

Just my opinion. I'll see how I like them.
