Ok...because I have been using my Coconut Oil regularly and going through my 1 gallons pretty fast I decided to buy a 5 gallon bucket,
It came today....and it scares me:! It is soooooooo big! The UPS guy, whom I am friends with, was amazed I would get such a huge bucket of....ANYTHING. Please help to remind me what I use it for...
What do you use your Coconut Oil for? All the wonderful uses?

Kathleen :

PS I think my DH is terrified as well.

It's funny though, when I first gotten my order of a gallon of CO it was like "what am i going to use this much CO for???" It took me a year to go through it and I didn'nt even use it in everything. I cook with it as much as i can and I add it to oatmeal and such. Also, I use it on the skin and in hair lightly.

You can make a wonderful salve with CO and beeswax. Just melt together in a 1:8 ratio of beeswax to CO, pour into containers and let cool. I love that stuff. I give it away to all my eczema suffering friends.

Basically, just pitch any other fat and use it? Hehe. I tried talking DH into getting a 5 gallon bucket and he's not interested in storing it or moving it around.

I always spread CO on toast before making sandwich...I add to oatmeal along with butter... I cook with it...I use it for baking...I eat it off the spoon...I add it to any low fat meat (like chicken breast).... I use it like medicine if the kids have a sore throat or stomach virus...

Next I think I am going to have to order the 5lb bucket - I can not even imagine my DH - our pantry seems SO small these days!! It seems like everything TF is Bigger...

I also just got my first 5 gallon bucket. I've always bought the 1 gallon buckets, but I got through them pretty quickly. I make all of our skin care products, especially my toddlers as he has really sensitive skin, and we use a lot of CO in it. I make lip balm, body butter, diaper rash butter, face cream, etc. I also use CO in replacement of any other cooking oil. I use it instead of shortening or butter (although we do use a little raw butter because it tastes sooo good!), if I'm frying or sauteeing I use CO, I use it in soups, on oatmeal and other hot cereal, etc.!

How funny - our first 5 gallon bucket just arrived a few days ago. I'm sure the delivery guy had fun hefting all 40 lbs of it I was actually expecting 5 of the 1-gallon buckets!

We just use it for cooking (frying eggs, stir-fry, etc.) and for putting a couple tablespoons into our morning kefir smoothies. We go through a gallon in under 2 months, I think.

Where can I find some of the recipes you use for your skin care products? I would love them...

I second that -- where do you get your recipes for salves and such! What is a reputable, not-drain-the-bank place to get CO? I have only gotten a jar once at Kroger, Spectrum. Refined is the best, right, and I read that extra-v and v are the same thing; that the process is different than with olive oil, so the terms are moot with CO. True or false?

I couldn't stomach the smell of co while pg, so it took us about a year to get through a gallon of it. I just ordered two gallons from Mountain Rose because DH thought the 5 gal would go bad before we used it all. Before I was pg, I was taking a tbsp straight a half hour before each meal (as suggested in EFLF). That's an easy way to go through it fairly quickly. DH prefers co to butter when cooking, so he uses quite a bit (I don't cook). I also use it as part of my daily deodorant "routine": scrub with bs, rinse with acv and let dry, rub with co and let dry before dressing. I've never had any odor issues with this routine (you can add a drop of eo to the co if you like fragrance).

Sihaya! You use it for deo? you scrub with baking soda (right?) and then you rinse with acv...what is that? That is something new. I haven't used anything much lately other than a mineral stick, but I feel like it doesn't work. Hmm.....
Mountain Herbs; is there anywhere else you would suggest for good CO?

How do you keep it from getting moldy? I bought a pretty hefty jar and it started getting moldy before I was even half-way through it.

Yikes! I'd question the quality of it. What brand was it?

I've had 5-gallon buckets of the expeller pressed coconut oil for 16 months without molding. Or other problems.

Get it cheap(er) at Mountain Rose Herb.

My new 5 gallon goliath is from Mountain Rose Herbs. I like it!:

Does someone have the recipe for some yummie chocolates made from CO and cocoa and a few others ingredients. This is something I would love.:

What about the EFLF fudge?
EFLF Coconutty Fudge
2c crispy almonds
1c coconut oil softened
1c raw honey (I used 1/4 cup and it was still awesome! SWEET!)
1c carob/cocoa powder
(2t chocolate extract if using carob)
1t vanilla
1/2t sea salt
Process all until well blended. Line large loaf pan with parchment paper and spread mixture 1/2 inch thick. Wrap in paper and refidgerate several hours. Cut into small squares and store in airtight container in fridge.

I got my 5 gallon bucket from MRH a couple of weeks ago & I LOVE it!

I use it in everything - stews, like coconut beef stew, curries, muffins (just sub it for butter), sauteeing veggies, all over our bodies after showering, in fudge - everything!

Oh, and I always save glass jars & as soon as it came, I scooped it out & filled up various jars - makes it easier than having to open the huge bucket all the time.

I get mine from Tropical Traditions

http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/vi...FQuXggody1GNag

They have a buyers program for people like us who buy lots. They also have the best quality I've been able to find anywhere...

As for recipes for skin care products, I'd be willing to share some when I get a chance to write them down. I do it from my head and kind of mix and stir until the consistency is right.

Whoa. I don't know that I'm ready to buy a 5-gallon bucket of the stuff, but this thread has inspired me to buy some more. I had a little jar of it once, and used it mostly on my hair and body, until I had to raid it for making ginger biscuits one time! They were delish. Using it in curries is a good idea too--I don't know that I'd go for it on fried eggs, but I'm willing to experiment. What difference does it make to muffins, flavour/texture-wise?

I melt mine, or at least soften it before I put it in. It has a very low melting point...

We put solid CO in our smoothies and just let the blender run for a minute. It gets completely dissolved that way.
