Receding gums..

Help! My gums are receding. Especially around my canine teeth. The tops are receding more than the bottom ones, but it is noticeable. My left top canine (#11) is receded to the point that I can see the ridge where the gum used to be.

I dont know what is going on. My dentist didnt say anything at my last visit in november, and I can afford to go back yet. Any ideas? Anything I can do to stop it?

I really really want to stop them from receding anymore, and I want to know why they are in the first place. I have looked on the web but havent found much information..

I just had my teeth checked (after 5 years of putting ot off!) and fortunately my teeth were great but they did mention that the cause of my receeding gums was hard toothbrushing. I do brush my teeth hard. They recommended that I get an electric toothbrush. Putting the spinning head on my tooth and not repeatedly brushing the gums back and forth will help my gums relax and they actually will come back down.
