I have the knitpicks option set and love it with all my heart, but didn't start with it. I bought it w/birthday money last year. I started with crappy aluminum needles that were given to me, which I completely hated. Then I started buying bamboo needles from Joann each time I got a 40% off coupon in the mail, or if they were on sale. I started using circulars to knit flat, which also meant buying less needles overall, since I didn't need straights. I now prefer knitpicks needles, but when I was more of a beginner bamboo was great because it wasn't too slippery for my skill level. I was able to sell most bamboo needles after I bought the KP set and recover some of my funds.
I second the suggestions above check out knitpicks for wool yarn. Their Wool of the Andes is very reasonable, comes in lots of beautiful colors, and their shipping is reasonable as well, even though it has gone up a bit. You could buy 10 balls of wool of the andes for around $23.00 including shipping, and that would set you up for awhile.
Enjoy, and best wishes for the upcoming birth of your new little one.
