what to make for someone in a warm climate?

I want to make something for a friend who lives in one of the southern states. I live in the Great White North so when I think quick projects I usually think hats and mittens She would have no need of these though.

What should I make? I'd like a small project, not something like a vest or cotton sweater - just something I could make fairly quickly.

Is she a cold person? I'm in Texas and would love a pair of fingerless gloves, especially since there is still a cold season. I run very cold though. Helpful huh?

I'm in a warm climate but I love to wear scarves in the winter...when it's a frigid 60 degrees

How about a shawl or a wrap?

My grandmother lives in a very warm area, but with AC being what it is, she is often cold, so I knit her an alpaca shawl. It's not as heavy as a scarf would be, and it covers more of her back, so it helps with chills.

Wrist warmers could also be good. Fingerless gloves like a pp mentioned. If you're open to non-wearables, there's always hot pads, trivets, coasters and the like. You could make her a purse/bag. Face cloth, dish cloth, hand towel, etc. A pair of slippers or felted clogs, because warm weather or not, I wear slippers almost every day. A netted shopping bag, a cell phone cozy. If she's a Starbucks drinker, a coffee cup cozy. A tea pot cozy if she's a tea drinker. There are all sorts of options.

How about socks?

I live in the way South. I use the heck out of Calorimetry. Any hat knit in worsted or lighter is useful for at least a couple of days of a couple of months. Socks are a good bet--many winter nights get chilly to cold, even if our days usually warm up to pleasant. Or what about a hot water bottle cozy? That's useful no matter the climate.

: that reminds me of when I visited Phoenix during Feburary. It was a balmy 70 degrees, it was 30's here in Washington, and there was a lady walking in front of me in a parka. I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops. :

OP I would love some of these http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/...curesocks.html. But I live in flip flops and would wear them all the time. I have toe socks for the really cold temps.

Depends on where in the south, and do you mean south as in The South or all states in the southern half of the country?

I live in Nevada, but I'm from Toronto and have lived in frigid Ottawa. I can tell you that it does get "cold" here in the southwest desert during winter, especially at altitude, although not anywhere as cold as the Great White North. But you feel it (especially after acclimatizing for a few years) because there's a huge swing in temperature that nobody up north gets...like tonight we'll go down to about 5C but it was 18C outside today. Fifteen to twenty degree shifts between night and day are really common, so you go out early in the morning and it's cold and then by midday you're shedding layers as fast as you can.

So if you're doing something for anyone in the southwestern deserts, light versions of cold weather gear that can be part of layering would certainly be welcome.

Relative humidity makes a difference too. A lot of The South is very humid, where as out here in the southwest it's dry as a bone. So keep that in mind in terms of drying items...a thick garment that has to be kept out of the dryer won't work as well in the severe humidity of New Orleans, but it'd be totally fine in Vegas.

And when in doubt, go for something practical, like pretty cloths or a wine bag.

Especially if there is wine in it

If this is what I think it is, then something like calorimetry would be perfect. It gets cold in the southern states, and folks who live in that climate have a harder time adjusting.

Hi Geo - you know what I am up to, don't you?

After almost a week of being snowed in, most places seem south to me right now

How about a phone/ipod cozy or small bag with a clip to help organize purse or diaper bag, they can clip it to the strap or even to a ring of a ring sling... or market bag... or felted bowl to keep knick knacks in... something not worn, that way you don't have to worry about the weather...

This little felted bag was quick and easy. You have to sign up for a free membership, if you haven't yet, to download the pattern:

Now that was totally addictive - something cute I knit up in just a couple of hours. That could be dangerous Now I know what to do with leftover yarn.....

It is already to mail to her tomorrow morning!

I like to knit mug cozies (scroll down for pattern) for friends. They knit up in a couple of hours and make a really cute gift. I include a new mug (or pretty vintage one), a box of tea and some sweets to go with it.

peace, Beth

Oooh - I love your cozy! If you don't already... you should seriously consider selling those on etsy. Sweet!

Good ideas! Everyday usuables are always much appreciated, and have absolutely nothing to do with the climate.
