Protein amount during pregnancy?

Does anyone here try to get 100g of protein (per the Brewer diet) daily during pregnancy? Do you think a high protein diet is important during pregnancy?

I had terrible swelling and my midwife always recommended to eat more protein that it would help keep the swelling down. I had terrible appetite so I didn't get near that. I wonder if I had if I could have worn shoes by the end..

I tried. After reading his book, and doing some research, I do believe it is important.

Ugh... would I have to eat a steak at every breakfast, dinner and lunch?

I ate 80-100grams of protein every day during my last pregnancy. I think it's highly important and you should really strive to get to it. Protein comes in other forms, not just meat. I would snack on cottage cheese, nuts, hard-boiled eggs, ect ect. You can do it, its actually not that difficult to do.

Does anyone know the protein content of raw milk?

I remember reading somewhere if you're following the WAPF pregnancy and nursing diet of four cups of milk and two eggs per day you are getting over half of what you need just from that.

It should be the same as for pasturized milk- pasturizing affects the ability of the body to assimulate the nutrients, but doesn't change the proportions of macronutrients.

According to www.Fitday.com, 1 cup of whole cow's milk has 8.3 grams of protein, 8.15 grams of fat, and 11.37 grams of carbs (I assume all in the form of lactose.)

I got 80-100 g every day with my last pregnancy but with this one my midwife suggested 75 because of the load on kidneys. I am a little confused because the days I got 100 I felt fantastic but the kidney angle makes sense.

I've never actually sat down and recorded my food intake, or tracked calories or grams of protein or fat or carbs, while pregnant. I ate when I felt hungry and stopped eating when I was full. If I was going to aim for a certain minimum amount of protein, I'd track for a few days and then, once I got a feel for what kinds of food choices resulted in the right amount of the nutrients, I'd stop keeping such careful track.

I can understand wanting a minimum protiein intake during pg, but I can't really comprehend a maximum or a close range. 75 grams is OK but 80 is too much and 70 isn't enough? How confusing! If you're hungry have another helping of whatever you've prepared for dinner!

The protein/kidney discussion has come up on another board I frequent, one for low-carb eating. The general consensus is that large amounts of protein aren't a problem for healthy kidneys, but if you already have kidney problems, too much protein in the diet could aggrevate it. High protein diets (especially when combined with carb restriction) really help maintain steady blood sugar levels, healthy triglicerides, etc, which can keep the whole body healthy and prevent kidney problems in the first place.

So, unless you already have reason to suspect that your kidneys are weaker than average, I can't see a valid reason to limit protein consumption, especially during pregnancy.
