breastfeeding. on stage.

I'm performing (and organizing) the vagina monologues at my college this year, and last weekend another girl in the play and I went to see another performance of it in town - support others in hopes they'd support us.

For those unfamiliar with the monologues, one is entitled "I was there in the room" and is about a woman witnessing a birth. The woman who performed this did it while holding her 7 week old daughter. The entire cast was sitting on stage for the whole play, and about fifteen minutes in the baby started wiggling and the mom just started nursing her, right on stage. No apology, no blanket, just a mom nursing her daughter.

I was basically thinking, "heck yes!," but the women in front of my friend and I were complaining the whole time. Finally I said "do you know what play you are at?"

Just thought I'd share. It was pretty cool.

I'll have to re-read (listen) to my audio copy, I listened to it so long ago I don't remember about the birth one.

That's great! And I can't help thinking there must be a story about the woman who was acting in this and having a 7 week old too!

That is just bizarre, that people at THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES would have an issue with bf'ing. :

It is bizarre, but it does not suprise me. I noticed several people leaving the performance at intermission because they were offended by it. I couldn't believe they had even gone, but there it is.

Wow...how cool.

I saw it a long time ago, pre-motherhood. I'd love to see it again to see how my perspective of it has changed.

I can think of the perfect retort (from her)

"It's the Vagina Monologues. Not the Breast Monologues."

Seriously, I think it's great that she nursed on stage as if it was the most normal and natural thing to do- which it is!!

Wow, that is really beautiful.

DD is a natural ... right on queue. It seems as if that is how the part should be played.

I talked to her for awhile afterwards and just told her I thought she was great, and cooed over her baby for awhile (at which point the mom said "oh, wanna hold her for a minute?" And darted off to the bathroom. Poor mama). I guess she'd always wanted to do this monologue since she first heard it performed, and never got the chance. Finally, she was free this year, and then got pregnant. Her daughter came almost three weeks late, so she would have been an eensy bit older, but not much.

She did tell me that she'd fought hard to be allowed to have the baby on stage with her, because the director was worried she'd fuss and make a problem. She slept and nursed peacefully through two nights of the performance. During the actual monologue, the mama put her in a sling. It was all very adorable.

(and I may have mentioned a time or twelve that I do a lot of babysitting)
