I officially LOVE our new pediatrician. I asked my midwife to recommend someone, since the last time we lived here I had a very mainstream ped. I think I may have figured out the "secret" to a "hands off" pediatrician...
He is not an American-born citizen. (Or I'm just lucky.)
I think someone said he might be from Poland? Anyway, I went into the office fully prepared to have to deal with vax questions (I was asked twice about Hep B in the hospital, and at his WIC appointment yesterday, they asked if I wanted them to give it to him there) and circumcision questions (same deal - asked about it twice in the hospital, and got the raised eyebrows at WIC)...
And the nurse at the ped's office just handed me the opt-out form and said, "All you have to do is sign this, you are the mommy, you are in charge." No trying to talk me into it, no scare mongering, no asking why, just a form to cover their butts and that is perfectly fine with me. Hooray!
When the ped checked Blake's little willy, he said, "Do you want to circumcise him?", to which I said no. And he said, "Good! I'm not circumcised, most men in the world aren't, it seems to be an American thing." He about fell over when he saw that Blake was in cloth diapers ("I never get to see these anymore!"), and went on and on about how wonderful it was that I was breastfeeding.
Blake's jaundice has gotten a little bit worse, (the WIC nurse said it was bad 3 times during his appointment yesterday and made a comment about how he was "so orange!") but there also hasn't been any sun here since he's been born, so there's not a lot I can do about it until Saturday. The ped said that he COULD run bloodwork, but he's not really that kind of doctor and prefers not to do too much testing and whatnot. (Can I KISS the ground he walks on now?!) So he told us to just stop in on Monday, no appointment necessary, he'd check his weight and take a look at him, but he wasn't really concerned about it. (I was waiting for the, "Let's head over to the bili lights and you need to start giving him formula" lecture that I've heard that others have gotten.)
I can barely understand a word he says, but any doctor who will do all of that, and between him and the nurse, they must've told me I was doing a good job 10 times (what mom - first child or otherwise - doesn't like to hear that?!)...I came out of there feeling like wonder-mom!
