So, what's keeping you up tonight?

I'll go first. I thought saying it might help me get to sleep.

My husband's lack of a job for the next school year. He is temp faculty at our alma matter, and applied for 2 regular positions they offered this year. They were both offered to other folks. By all accounts he has been great - just not as "great" as the other folks - lets just not go into the painful details, but who is gonna hire someone who can't even get a job from his alma matter hiring into 2 positions? He hasn't even gotten any call backs from the other applications he's sent out. Let's face it, I'd wonder what was wrong with such a candidate.
I think he's brilliant, and our baby seems to think daddy makes the sun rise every morning, but that's not much consolation to someone whose gotten such a sh%$ deal.
Now we have to move again to goddess knows where - probably for another temp position 'cause all the tenure track ones are filled by this time of year. Heck, maybe we'll just move in with our parents. We were talking about it at dinner, and considered living with them in the summers if he has to go through a series of one-year jobs, moving every year to far away places nowhere near the grand parents. It would save rent money and give our family some much-needed time to be together.
I just want to cry but don't quite seem to be able to.

I'm sorry about the frustrations you're facing. Rough times sometimes feel like they're here for good and it's hard to not feel discouraged. I hope you can find some things to feel good about and laugh about until things turn around.

Me, I have no clue why I'm up. I tend toward insomnia but had been having a good sleeping streak of late. So I'm not sure.

My mom's having an endoscopy done tomorrow. She has pain and tons of cancer in her family and I'm worried they're going to find something. So is she. I wanted to call her and talk to her about it but I didn't want to call her with my worry and I knew I couldn't fake it.

for my mom.

Similar woes here. They are moving dh's department into a different college (moving from Liberal Arts into the Engineering dept) and the new college only hires PhDs to teach. Dh will have a Masters, but not a PhD. He is on a year by year contract, so there is nothing after May. He *might* be able to get them to make an exception, but at this point, he has his hopes on another job that would be really fullfilling without the stress of this year to year crap, but that job would mean a major move.

as tired as I am, a combination of nerves and excitement over the short time left til I head down to see my dh on his leave is keeping me up a bit. I was on YIM til a few minutes ago and I think I'm going to try and sleep here in a few but I'm not counting on success

Heartburn.

See I made this great cream sauce for the pasta tonight... it tasted divine, but it isn't agreeing with me.

Glad to see I've got company. Baby just woke up, and I nursed him back to sleep. Nursing usually makes me sleepy. Not tonight.

to you mamas. Academia is HARD (pre-tenure). It's a crazy way to live.

I'm on the west coast, so it's only 1 am here. I'll probably be up later though. It's sort of dumb, basically if I have even the faintest whiff of stress I stay up too late. Maybe I'll take some 5-HTP, that has conked me out before when I didn't want it to...

What is 5-HTP and can I get some right now in a small town with no stores open past 5 pm?

Oh, yeah, and without leaving my adorable sleeping babe?
Probably not. Aside from ordering it off the internet, but then you'd have to wait.

I think it's some kind of amino acid that the body turns into seratonin and then turns into melatonin. When I've taken it before 9 PM, I've conked out into a deep nap not long afterwards... eventually I made the connection, since I don't usually nap.

How about some herbal tea and quiet relaxing music? I always figure, if you're going to have insomnia, might as well make it as nice as possible.

Well, I did have some Girl Scout cookies : If I make tea, I think the beautiful dreamer might wake up. I think I'll give it a go anyway. I have some nice Bulgarian night-time my cousin in law gave me.

You know what? My back door neighbors seem to be awake too. I just stepped into the kitchen to put the teapot on, and their windows are all lit up. Wonder why?
They don't know I'm up unless their looking in my window since the only light here is from my computer.

Oof. Well now I have really bad heartburn, so I guess I have to stay up... this would feel even worse lying down. We tried a new recipe tonight (or last night, depending on how you figure) and it was awful.

Hm--maybe they're having a midnight snack? Or maybe they do this all the time and you don't even know because you're normally asleep at this hour?

I just get insomnia from time to time. My lovely babe is happily sleeping w/ dh, the big kids went to bed with bad belly-aches (ds NEVER has a belly ache), and nobody's going to school or work tomorrow because of it. DH has a nasty sore throat and 4 of us have been coughing. I have not gotten sick. Yet.

And are you all still awake?
Me too.
Now I can see two deer eating outside.
I'm no longer nocturnal; I'm crepuscular.
