Help me w/ this decision!

A little background: Teagan is almost 5 and is in a home-based private Montessori (licensed, top of the line materials, VERY Montessori, accredited teacher, etc) and is thriving. We have been very happy with the education she is receiving. Unfortunately, it only goes through the third primary year (Kindy year) and after that we are on our own. It sent me out on a quest of looking for an Elementary program since, in our area, things fill up fast.

So I went today and toured a Montessori school with the elementary program - not surprisingly, I totally fell in love with it. It's everything and more that I want for Teagan. It is grades 1-3, though they are getting ready to expand to 4 and 5 as well... this will 100% happen by the time she is ready for it. Their classroom is amazing, they have a nature preserve behind the school w/ an "outdoor classroom" that mainly consists of chopped up logs for the children to sit on, etc. They have Spanish, PE and Music 2x's a week and take many field trips.

ONLY there is a catch - they have now changed and typically only enroll children that have attended THEIR Kindergarten program into it for a few different reasons. One being they only take in 21 kids for the E program (and it's grades 1-3) and also to make sure the children are prepared correctly for the transition (since Montessori E is so much different). They are finding more of their K students move up into their E program and obviously the other children from previous years stay so there is only so much space.

That said, they do have space for Teagan to do the K program should we choose.... it's all day, 8:30 to 3:00 M-F. There are 6 to 7 Kindergartners in each class and when the younger children leave (at 11:45), they will combine two classes into 1 so there will be about 14 K students that are co-taught by the two teachers. Seems good. They have music, pe and Spanish 2x's a week. There really wasn't anything I didn't like about the school.

The only negatives are the cost is a bit more and I was hoping to not start paying so much so soon - the other being the feeling of commitment I have to Teagan's current teacher. I KNOW she'd understand but I can't help but feel terrible if we move her for next year.

With all that said, I did make an appt. for Teagan to go in next Tuesday for 2 hours to do the "assessment" of sorts... more or less her just going into a primary classroom and working - no worries there since she's done Montessori for three years now. The other is next Thursday afternoon for me to meet the Elementary teachers and hear more about their program and how they run.

So what would your feelings be????? DH has no input at all!

I'd imagine if you can afford it, if you think your daughter will thrive, if it offers a further program than your current school does, it sounds like a great thing. I wouldn't worry about leaving at the end of the school year. Do what's best for your daughter, not what's best for the teacher at her current school.

Exactly, your daughter's education is the first priority so if this school is the best fit for her now and in the longer term, I think it would be a poor choice not to go for it. Hope the assessment goes well.

From a teacher's perspective, it is difficult when we do not see students continue through their kindergarten year. It is difficult when kindergarten students graduate. That is, however, just part of the process of teaching. There's a time to let them free and know they'll be fine.

If you chose the other school, asking your daughter if she wants to draw a card for her teacher at the end of the year would be a well-received gift.

Whatever you decide to do, it sounds like you have 2 great opportunities for your daughter - to either choose to stay in a great environment or move to another one. Which one is the best choice is up to you, but at least it sounds like you can't make a bad choice.

I can see how they'd prefer students who have done M primary, but why do they care that it was their M primary? You'd think that with her Montessori background, there wouldnt' be much of a problem. My school is always so desparate for new students I can't imagine them turning anyone away because of that!

It sounds like it would be a good transition to make so she can stay in M longer, though it means moving on quicker than you'd like.

Thanks everyone.

I obviously know her education and well being come first over the feelings of her current teacher - thing is her current school is amazing, the teacher the best I could ask for. Going into a new school, there is no guarantee what we would be getting for her K year (teacher wise).... the education provided as far as materials, etc would be the same so it is basically taking the gamble of will we be as pleased overall.

The director at the new school did tell me under normal circumstances he would never recommend moving a child out of their current Montessori and into a new one at the K year but given we want her to continue into the Elementary program, it is an "exception."

Luckily for us, Teagan is a very vocal child and loves to tell me about everything she does - I told her of the upcoming school appointment and she's excited to see what the new school has to offer. Guess I'll let her insight speak first before making any sort of decisions!
