Beginning knitters support thread - Page 9

Nope no yarn shop...Im actually knitting from a book but my book only has one paragraph of knitting in circular needles...I have no idea what your talking about in the 2 circulars..LOL that sounds complicated..I saw it but it sounds and looks complicated...This is what im doing im casting on the number of casts i need to cast on just like i would cast on in regular needles...I do about 112 cast ons . Im using a 8 in needle cause i know its easier for me to learn. Anyhoe i mark the first stitch i did and then i just take the last knit and begin knittingso it makes everything thats in my left move to the right. Cause if i take the first stich in the right(which would be my first cast on in the right) i have no idea what to do...Im telling you i know im doing something really wrong here cause instructions say something and i think im not understanding what to do very well...

Monica, how is it you went straight to the longies pattern? I'm so scared to do those after reading some of the posts on the longies thread!!

Cyborgoddess, I'm working on circular needles. I'm going to move the stitches to the back like you said. I hope I can figure this out. I'm sooooooo close!! Thanks!!

I showed off what I had done today at ds's party & everyone loves it so far. Just can't wait to finish!!

I can't find the info in my brain. If no one else has a visual, I might cast on for my soaker tonight (I need to) and take pictures with the digital cam tonight. I simply can't recall the details without looking at it LOL

When you get how to do this Linda, you will be rolling.

Angela, I went right to the longies. Don't worry- and Theresa rewrote the pattern about the crotch (after those posts) and that was the only confusing part. Aurora said the short rows were actually easier on the longies than the soaker.

Now that I know how to do it, I'm eager to do another. It's mostly knitting for inches, the bulk of it is just stockinette. If you get the short rows from your soaker, you'll have no problem.

I'm a little scared of the soaker, but eager to try it.

linda, so are you casting on on both needles? you only need to cast on on the left needle, then just start knitting into like you said you are with the right needle and all the stitches will move to the right like you said. does this make sense?
Nope cause im only casting on in my left needle...:LOL then my last cast on will be in my left needle and my first cast on is on my right needle. My yarn in on my left needle. When i go knit something goins horribly wrong and i have sometype of knot this is the part that me..

I just tried it casting on in the right needle to where my yarn would stay in my right and my first cast on would be in my left and began knitting my first stich and almost got to the very end but i had to destroy it because i couldnt get the stitches(last 4) to move off the needle..Everything looked joined thought so im guessing thats good news..BUT everything is so tight it just doesnt let me slide cast ons easy like when i use double pointed neeldes....: Does that make any sense at all??

This thread is great! I am a beginner knitter also, and am actually starting my first classes this coming week. I really want to learn how to make cute sweaters, peruvian baby hats and knit socks eventually! To begin though I think my first project will be a scarf Anyway wish me luck!

Btw what are good places to buy yarns online? The yarn shop I'm going to is pretty spendy!

Linda, I'm pretty sure you are doing it right- that the working yarn has to be on the right when you knit into that left stitch to join. Just be careful your loops don't twist around- keep checking so the needle loops are on the outside and bumps on the inside- twisting means ripping.

I'm guessing that you are simply knitting or casting on too tight and you are fine otherwise. I knit tighter on circular needles, too- a lot of people do. Don't pull each stich tight - let the next stictch pull it- or if you do pull it, just do it gently- don't make it tight to the needle- the next stitch takes care of that.

Good luck- sounds like you've almost got it.

Welcome rainbowmoon and I hope your soaker is coming along well, Angela.

Thanks, Monica!! I'm humming right along on the front flap now!! Yippee! I think I might actually have it done in a day or 2!!

I know you will do just fine on the soaker if you've got the longies done...& I've seen your longies & it's beautiful!

I just won a bunch of yarn off ebay. Misc. stuff. Can't hardly wait for it to get here!!

Oh, no LOL. I hope that meant it was just a pain but you are done.

I haven't cast on for my soaker yet.

Can anyone share their favorite websites for beginning knitters? I am particularly looking for one with good instructions (text and pictures) for the basics. I bought Kid's Knitting, and because their instructions for casting on look so different from the way I learned how to do it in my 2 hour Learn to Knit class, I am now totally confused.

If you can't tell I am pretty craft impaired, but I determined to stick with this!!!

Common Threads has great online videos of tons of techniques!

Linda, it sounds to me like you are doign the cat on correct, but you are pulling it WAY too tight and that's making it difficult to follow thorugh ont he next row. Make a conscious effort to not pull too tightly and try to make the cast one nice and even and loose, and see if that helps

This is so exciting!!! I'm almost done....

Just weaving in my ends, i think there's about 35 of them altogether...and then i need to join together one seam......

I didnt think i could knit this stocking, i totally thought it would be too hard, but i'm almost done and it looks pretty darn good. I'll put up a scan when i get it totally finished.
How exciting Aster!! You must post pictures!

Monica, I was at my wits end with the kitchener stitch last night to put the front & back flaps together, but I sat here & searched other sites & Theresa's forum & finally got it together & the seam looks great! I'm hoping the soaker looks a little better after a washing. It looks huge! I still have to finish off the legs & the cord, but it's basicly done. There are a few mistakes in it, but I don't care. I figure it will get better as I keep doing them. I found your rip-it, rip-it post on the LTK forum last night & lmao!!

I'll post a picture when it is completely done.

Aster and Angela- looking forward to seeing pictures! The stocking must be really colorful to have all those tails to weave in.
It sounds beautiful.

Glad the kitchener worked. It took me three tries for the tiny little part on the longies but then I got the tension right.

I've got the back and LF and half the RF done on the Joseph toddler sweater from knitty.com. It will be a small miracle if I have enough yarn. It said 4 skeins, which I have but only one ball left for 2 long sleeves. It's yarn I can't get more of because its discontinued.

My dd is petite and I could have made it shorter- I'm still a newbie and tend to follow patterns on blind faith. I may shorten each sleeve just to get enough yarn. I hope I do that right with the increases. If not, well, another learning experience.

Then I need to figure out how to block which seems pretty scary.

Ok, it's done...I think I found one BIG error. I think I should have measured the body from the ribbing not the body itself! He might fit into this good next year. It's ok for now, but I'm disappointed. I'm even contemplating ripping it all apart & starting from scratch. The yarn is so beautiful that I can't bear it's not right.

Here's a link to the picture anyway. I also don't know what is going on with my camera. It's taking dark pictures all of a sudden. Need to find that manual!!

I'll try to take a better picture later, if I'm not ripping.

Yah!!!

I did it! I had about 4 false starts, but once i quit ripping stitches, it was actually pretty enjoyable.

I havent put boo's name on yet, but it shouldnt take too long to do that.

Monica~it seems like there should be more colours happening for the amount of ends i had to weave, but with intarsia there are lots of blocks of colour, so every colour chunk gets it's own ball or bobbin of yarn, thus lots of ends.

huskrkid~it did turn out really well, bummer about the measuring thing. The yarn you chose is absolutely lovely! your little guy is a real cutie too. =)
